Ferrari won’t sell LaFerrari Aperta to David Lee, its most devout fan.

There’s a good chance you’ve already heard of David Lee, he’s a watch and jewelry mogul in California. He has possibly built an even bigger reputation for having one of the best Ferrari collections in the world. The guy drives a Ferrari 7 days a week, owns each of the company’s prior supercars, as well as a former Formula 1 car, four recently purchased cars (to help increase his chances of getting on the double-super-secret list of supercar buyers), and tons of Ferrari gear.

Lee is vociferous about his addiction to the Ferrari brand. He frequently posts photos to social media, shouting his love from the digital rooftops. Perhaps because of this, Ferrari has denied his appeals to purchase their new open-topped hypercar, the LaFerrari Aperta. Ferrari also previously denied him the chance to buy a closed-top LaFerrari as well. Though, he managed to find a brand new one to purchase from a Ferrari-approved buyer who was going through a divorce.

Ferrari has not commented on the situation, and won’t provide Lee with a reason why he’s been denied the right to purchase the 2.2 million dollar car. A source has told the LA Times that Lee’s over-the-top style is the reason. “The factory doesn’t like the publicity he creates,” the source claims. “They hate all the noise, and he loves all the noise.

We have to wonder if perhaps Ferrari have studied how vocal Lee is about the brand, and knew he would make this information public. There can’t possibly be a more effective and inexpensive way to promote the company’s “exclusive” brand image than denying someone like David, right? What do you think about this story? Are we wearing too much tin foil in our hat?
