HKS Toyota GR Supra A90 Takes a Highly Stylized Test Drive

By -

HKS tests out its brand new Supra performance parts on a spirited drive with Max Orido behind the wheel.

Few automotive (re)launches in recent history have faced as much controversy and division as the 2020 Toyota Supra. Here is a legendary nameplate revived to much fanfare, yet also a lot of backlash. The latter because the new Supra isn’t really much like the old Supra, yet also not really a Toyota, either. But now that Toyota’s revived sports car is here, we’d prefer to focus on the positive. Like this beautiful video of a rare, HKS-modified example of the GR Supra A90.

A mere 90 of these special-edition Supras were built, and all of them sold in Europe. Each starts out as a Premium model with Storm Gray matte paint, 19″ matte black wheels, and a red leather interior with Alcantara sport seats. Renowned aftermarket parts maker HKS got their hands on one of these special launch cars, and they were quick to begin using it as a developmental mule.

And that’s exactly what’s going on in the video above – testing, with renowned racer/drifter Manabu “Max” Orido behind the wheel. The HKS Supra is fitted with a prototype muffler and Hipermax adjustable springs. A new set of wheels and super-sticky tires rounds out the upgraded package. If nothing else, the car emits some pretty pleasant sounds as it rips down the backroads, staying nice and flat in the corners.

By all accounts, the new Supra is a pretty solid performer right out of the box. But as we’ve learned from history, it can always be made better. And thanks to companies like HKS, we won’t have to wait long to improve our shiny new rides.
