Lamborghinis aren’t usually found on the racetrack. Sure you have the Super Trofeo series, and a few Gallardos racing in a series or two, but Lamborghini has never been a company about lap times.

They’ve always gone for the brash and unashamed crowd that will pull up to a sleepy community and rev the balls off their ferocious V12s! However, as of late, Lamborghini has been changing, and lap times have become increasingly important. As too has racing.

Last week we showed you the new Huracán racecar. It’s a thing of beauty and terror. Between the looks and the V10 howl, it’s a serious performer. But the car was originally only slated to compete in the Super Trofeo Blancpain series. Now however, Lamborghini might be going back on that original commitment, at least in respects that they might be going racing another place too.

Lamborghini was there this weekend at the Virginia International Raceway for the Tudor United race, and spoke to Sportscar365. The Lamborghini rep told them that they’ve had a lot of interest in a Huracán GTD car, and since in 2016 the regulations would be converting to GT3 regulations, the company is considering selling more of the racer to teams in the series.

I covered the series when it came to Road America a few weeks ago, and I can tell you that the V10 from the R8s was flipping fantastic. And those are the old engines. This new Huracán racer most likely sounds even better in person.

The rep also said that the company wants to open up a “new era of Lamborghini motorsport activities,” but in reality, it’s really like opening up to the first page. He was hopeful that they might be able to get a car ready for next season, but it might not be possible. Let’s just hope it comes about more sooner than later because I can’t wait to see that thing tearing up the track!
