Mark Webber Rockets Around Nurburgring In New GT3 RS

By -

Former Formula 1 driver and Porsche racer Mark Webber thinks a GT3 RS should be in his garage.

Mark Webber is one of those people who can drive the wheels off anything, and through his racing career, he’s done exactly that. Most recently, he’s been behind the wheel of Porsche’s championship winning Porsche LMP1 car, but Porsche’s road cars are still just as impressive to the Aussie driver.

Webber’s first win in Formula 1 was at the Nurburgring, so it became a fitting environment to test the new GT3 RS. As Porsche’s fastest non-turbocharged road car, it has a big task ahead, but it leaves Webber impressed.

As we ride along initially, the first impression comes from the flat-six motor with Webber exclaiming “listen to that engine!!” And what an engine it is, especially with an atmospheric 9,000 RPM redline. Pushing only the rear wheels is a 520 horsepower flat-six, and controlled through a lightning quick PDK dual clutch gearbox. Does that gearbox take anything away from the driving experience? Absolutely not.

“The aerodynamics, the stability of this car, the grip it’s got, gives me confidence to really lean on it,” says a smiling Webber. He also points out that by design, the brakes can be used lap after lap after lap on the limit. With cooling air intakes that draw air from the top of the car, rather than from the under side, it also helps with the aerodynamic downforce.

The advantage? When you’re really pushing the limit, the car remains planted, stable and surprisingly easy to drive as evidenced by Mark’s excitement. “You could do this all day! I love this car!”

After getting out of the car to reflect on his first on-track experience, the Formula one racer confirms what Porsche wanted to hear, saying “it’s an absolute brutal little weapon.”

He also wants one in his garage. As for us, we’ll take yellow as well.
