In just a few short months, we should start seeing a more production ready version of the Maserati Alfieri. The company green-lit the project about a month ago, but since then they’ve kept details very close to the vest.

However, now Maserati’s UK marketing director, James Cowan, is sharing a few details about the upcoming sports car. While speaking with Autocar, Cowan stated that the Alfieri will retain the concept’s name for the production model. He also mentioned the Alfieri will arrive in showrooms after the Levante SUV.

Cowan then went on to mention that  the Alfieri, “will be as desirable as a Jaguar F-Type or Porsche 911 but considerably more exclusive, and as a result special.”

What that means is that the Alfieri will have a massively bigger price tag than its direct competitors.

The Alfieri is set to ride on a heavily modified Ghibli platform when it finally hits the showrooms around 2016 or 2017. It will likely use the same 404 horsepower turbocharged 4.0L V6 as the Ghibli. Maserati insiders point to the car not coming with a V8, since that engine is set for the next iteration of the GranTurismo.

It’s an interesting concept, although I’m not so sold on the name. Couldn’t it inspire a bit more passion and lust, rather than just remind me of a bleach-blond Food Network host that shall not be named?
