According to a recent market study by iSeeCars, the Porsche 911 is no. 2 on the list of cars that are resistant to depreciation.

For many automakers, iSeeCars says cars lose a substantial amount of value once they’re considered “used.” After studying three million three and five year old used cars sold in 2022, most cars lost about 33.3% of their market value. The Porsche 911, though, only lost 14.6% of its value — only second in line to the Jeep Wrangler. Like the Wrangler, the 911 comes in a wide variety of models and trim levels that appeal to all sorts of drivers, making it easier to reach a broader audience. Recently, Porsche has announced an off-road Dakar variant, making it even more diverse of a vehicle.

The study places the need for escapism and fun during the pandemic as the reason the 911 and other sports cars actually saw an increase in demand, and thus lessened the typical depreciation of a three-five year old 911 by 17% from last year’s national average. This also created the prices for new sports cars to jump, which then increased the popularity of buying a used car with low miles.

“The market is pricing late-model used cars as though they were new,” said Karl Bauer, iSeeCars’ Executive Analyst. “If shoppers can’t buy a new car, the next closest thing is a used car with low miles, thus the appreciation in value for these cars.”

What this spells out is simple: no matter what the world is going through, there will always be a need for a complete sports car – which the Porsche 911 has strived hard to be. Since the first model year, Porsche has kept the formula fairly unchanged: a peppy rear mounted engine, a transmission that’s both aggressive enough to be driven quickly but comfortable enough to be driven daily, and looks that complement anyone’s aesthetic.

Whether brand new or only a few years old, there’s a 911 out there that’s meant for everyone – and now we all know that even after a few years, the value will only drop a little bit.
