Racing event treats fans to exciting season closer in Los Angeles.

It came down to the very last race in the 2017 Red Bull Global Rallycross season, but Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross driver Scott Speed managed to hold on to his points lead to become the 2017 GRC Supercar champion. Speed’s teammate, Tanner Foust, won the Los Angeles event to secure second place.

The annual Red Bull GRC race at the Port of Los Angeles is one of our favorite events of the year. First of all, the racing action is intense and unpredictable — a five-wide starting grid means that anything could happen at the first corner.

We started the day by visiting the paddock to watch the teams meticulously prepare each car for the day’s five rounds of racing.

Each of the GRC vehicles started out life as a production car but then received extensive modifications just about everywhere, increasing engine output to 600 horsepower and strengthening the chassis and suspension to withstand 70-foot jumps and door-to-door action.

And helping to put power to the ground are versatile tires from BFGoodrich, the official tire supplier of GRC and well-known for its 20 consecutive wins at the Baja1000 as well as winning the 24 hours of Le Mans.

When it came time for the main event, the Supercar finals, everyone was on the edge of their seat. Only 24 championship points separated the top two contenders, Speed and Foust, and it was going to be a battle to the end.

Each driver put on a great show of skill and finesse, drifting around corners and fighting for positions. Speed ultimately emerged victorious for the season with a hard-fought second-place finish in the final race of the year, earning him the title of 2017 Red Bull Global Rallycross Champion.
