Rumormill: New Bugatti Veyron to Hit 288mph
256 miles per hour in a car is bonkers. The idea of speed like that in a road car was the stuff of fantasy before the Veyron showed up. Admittedly, so was the idea of buying a car with sixteen cylinders, four turbos, three radiators, and a thousand horsepower. And yet, it arrived and broke a bunch of records all in the pursuit of incomparable speed. From the sound of it though, Bugatti isn’t finished.

CAR magazine says that Bugatti is going to bring out another variant of the Veyron for 2013 that’ll hit 288mph. Just to put that in perspective, the world’s fastest car (the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport) is capable of hitting 267mph. They’ve already got the crown, but I guess there’s no harm in widening the gap.

At speeds this high, the challenge of going faster is immense. Top speed is basically the limit of how fast the Veyron can push itself through the air. There are three ways to deal with that: power, weight, and aerodynamics. Since the Veyron is already super slippery, they’ll likely attack the other fronts. We should expect to see this new Super Veyron to have in the vicinity of 1600 hp. Car magazine’s sources say that boring out the 8.0L W16 to 9.6 will get them the power they need. Bugatti will also be cutting a whopping 550 lbs from the Veyron. And forget about the 0-60 time. It’ll dispatch that milestone in 1.8 seconds.

It’ll also probably cost as much as you think. The original Veyron shocked the world with it’s one million dollar sticker price. Since then, a million dollars has become the new normal for exclusivity. I expect this one to cost well in excess of that. Car magazine says it’ll go for over two million euros.
