155-horsepower British racing roadster takes on the 610-horsepower Lamborghini with a special guest.
It is hard to compare the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder and the Caterham 310R, but the Lovecars YouTube channel does just that in one of this video. The two hosts take the two open-air sports cars for a cruise through the English countryside to see how they offer driving excitement in very different ways.
The Introduction
At the beginning of the video, one host gives the other a chance to pick between a topless Italian sports car and a topless British sports car, but the second host, Tiff Needell, of Fifth Gear fame, doesn’t know what is behind the doors. He figures that the Italian car is either a Ferrari or a Lamborghini and he hopes that the British car is the new McLaren or perhaps something from Aston Martin.
He looks fairly disappointed when the door sporting the British flag is opened, revealing the Caterham 310R while the other host gets to spend the video behind the wheel of the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder.
The Competition
The Huracan offers 610 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, an advanced all-wheel drive system, the sharp angles of the modern Lamborghini lineup and a premium luxury interior. It does so with a price starting around 200,000 British pounds and a curb weight around 3,400 pounds.
The Caterham offers 155 horsepower and 119 lb-ft of torque with rear-wheel drive, a bare-bones interior and the exterior design of a 1960s open-wheel race car. The 301R has a price starting around 30,000 British pounds and it weighs just over a thousand pounds.
Although the Lamborghini has almost four times as much power as the Caterham, the Huracan is more than three times heavier than the 310R. As a result, the Caterham offers a thrilling driving experience, similar to that of the Lamborghini, but the two get there in their own ways.
Caterham is Great, Lambo is Better
In the end, both hosts love the open-air sports car that they spend the day driving, but the general consensus is that the Lamborghini – while nearly seven times more expensive – it the better car in every way. However, the low-cost Caterham offers high performance driving at a fraction of the cost, just without the frills of the Raging Bull.
"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.
"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.
"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.
"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.
"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.
