Watch this Off-Road Porsche 911 Climb A Volcano

With some hectic off-road modifications, this synthetic-fuel-powered Porsche is now a world record holder after climbing a Volcano.
We likely don’t have to tell you that the 992 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S is a fantastic and capable car. That’s common knowledge among the enthusiast and racing community. However, this story sheds more light on just how capable the almighty Porsche 911 is. It quite literally ascends to new heights. World record heights, in fact.
As highlighted in a video on the YouTube channel DPCCars and a recent Porsche press release, a 992 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S now holds the world record for the highest a car has ever driven. At an altitude of 22,093 feet, it’s the highest any gasoline or diesel engine car has ever driven. Adding the fact that it climbed to the summit of a Volcano is really just icing on the cake.
The record was achieved with synthetic fuels.

According to the press release from Porsche, the team chasing this record used two identical cars. Both are 992 Carrera 4S models with modifications and support from HIF Global, Schaeffler Group, Mobil 1, and Tag Heuer. Though both cars (nicknamed D and E) set out on the adventure, only Car E took the record. In true Porsche overachieving fashion, though, the car made it to the Volcano’s summit. It physically could not have gone higher.
The cars retain the factory turbocharged flat-six engine and seven-speed manual transmission. However, those two components are virtually the only stock components on these remarkable builds. Portal axles to increase ground clearance, Michelin off-road tires, underbody protection, carbon fiber seats, and five-point harnesses made these incredibly robust and capable off-road beasts. In addition, they both ran on HIF Global eFuels, proving that synthetic fuels are extremely capable, even in the most drastic scenarios.
Additionally, the lead car had a custom-developed steer-by-wire system that allowed racing driver Romain Dumas (who piloted the car for the record) to have exact feedback from the steering to ensure complete control of the car.
The future looks great for the Porsche 911, synthetic fuels, and cars in general.
“Congratulations to the whole team – a remarkable and inspiring achievement,” said Dr. Frank Walliser, Vice President Complete Vehicle Architecture and Characteristics at Porsche AG. “This project began as a ‘what if,’ and I’m so proud to work for a company that really believes in pushing the boundaries and learning by exploring. The cars we created for this challenge are technological showcases – and are running entirely on eFuels currently in development.”
While many folks have a bleak outlook on the future of performance cars and a tendency to lean away from electric power, this remarkable feat proves that internal combustion isn’t set to die off completely. As technology advances in developing both electric vehicles and sustainable fuel alternatives for the cars we already have, we’re likely to see more and more awesome stories like this coming our way.
