any 996 turbo owners have a problem with popping out of 2nd gear ? could happen when you let off the throttle in 2nd or under heavy load in 2nd just as you would shift to 3rd .would like to hear what it took to fix this problem or what you would expect to have to do to fix this problem which seems to affect maybe 10 % of 996 turbos.

There's even a current, active thread in the 996 Turbo forum about it. Look at those. The answer to your problems is the G-box detent fix. The active thread talks about a fix.

i would say a greater percentage than that, but by now, most have remedied the issue one way or another. best way is a rebuild requiring replacement of the 1st/2ng gears and synchros. ( they are of the triple cone variety for ease of operation and smoothness, but less so durability..)

the other option as teflonjones has wisely suggested is the gbox detent "mod". that one is a bit less dependable ( from what i have heard, can't say from experience..) and will not cure it once it's happening ( the synchro dogrings get rounded, and there ain't no metal thingamabob gonna "unround" em! )..

but the best one of all that is available without rebuilding the box, is one available from roger at california motorsports. that one IS the sh*t.

having said all that. i've been done this road and have had my boxes rebuilt a few times for one reason or another ( though not driver error! lol ) and a rebuild is the way to go. obviously, that's more costly while the detent mod's are not, by comparison. some folks get lucky with the detent mod IF the issue is caught early enough.
