Preventative maintenance for second gear pop out that even a caveman can do. PICS
Here is a DIY for second gear pop out or more so a solid feel in the shifter that the next gear is engaged.
You will need to remove the panels that cover the trans also may need to lower the trans.
Tools: 13mm socket, 8mm allen, small magnet and some sealer.
The trans
the plug thats need to be remove in order to gain access, bolt needs to be removed first.
8mm allen needed to remove plug.
Plug out, clean sealer off.
Use the magnet to remove spring and detent
Now the big trick.. I add a 8mm ball that is a factory part to pre load the spring a bit more. place the ball inside the detent and insert the factory spring on top of it. This mod will make the shifts feel solid and firm.
Here is a before and after the 8mm ball
re install the plug with a little sealer on the treads and then put the bolt back in the trans case. Re install the under body and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
Here is the part number for the 8mm ball.

very curious about this. Was/is the ball spec'd in other OEM configurations? and if so, which ones?
Also, can you describe the before and after shift feel with the mod? I'd love to eliminate the slop both in selecting a gear and in the shifter once a gear is engaged in my car, but I know there's only so much you can do with a cable unit.
Thanks for the tip!

This is not a factory update. This is a simple upgrade to help prevent second gear pop out, and firmer shifts. The ball is under $1 in cost from Porsche, and with a little sealer and time you can have a peace of mind mod for super cheap. One company sells their own mod like this for around $200. Roger at CMS makes a shift arrester which is the true way to fix this but needs the trans to be take apart.
Same thing my little mod does
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PORSCHE-TRAN...item25809eca12
Roger@CMS real fix the problem part
Now with the $198 you saved you can say
A) your oil/filter change was free
B) get your wife something nice
C) put it away for future mods

Nice mod. I take it another model uses the ball instead of the piston to lock into the detent. Using both essentially preloads the spring to a greater degree by adding length to the piston.
Thanks for sharing this. Your 8mm ball and a smear of sealer would be a bargain on ebay at $50 compared to the longer piston at $200 and the fixed spoiler hardware for $170.

Sweet write-up Tim... Thanks for posting... I have used the Gbox dedent(DO NOT USE!) and the CMS arrester (GREAT PRODUCT). Do you know if this ball will be in sync with the CMS part? or will it cause an issues?
