I did this mod last night and it is a royal PITA. Keep in mind that I didn't remove the belly pan or lower the transmission.

The biggest issue is getting the allen head bolt loose. Nothing larger than a basic allen wrench will fit (forget the drivers that use a ratchet). Basically approximately four inches of leverage. There's no room for a wrench or anything else to give you additional leverage.

I was finally able to pry against the CV joint with a wooden pole to break the bolt loose.

Trust me, I have a bigger tool assortment than most and there is just no room. For reference, I just removed the Sequential Manual Gearbox from my M5 and installed a new multi disk clutch.

I would highly recommend following the instructions and planning the time to remove the belly pan and lower the transmission slightly.

Later, Steve

These are the tools I have used for this job. I had to put a pipe at the end of my ratchet to get the plug loose.

Did you lower the trans any? I didn't have room for a wrench that long.

No Steve. I did not. But have to admit, it was really tight and at one point I was not sure if I was going to be able to loosen that plug….

You will need to remove the panels that cover the trans also may need to lower the trans.

Tools: 13mm socket, 8mm allen, small magnet and some sealer.

The trans

the plug thats need to be remove in order to gain access, bolt needs to be removed first.

8mm allen needed to remove plug.

Plug out, clean sealer off.

Use the magnet to remove spring and detent

Now the big trick.. I add a 8mm ball that is a factory part to pre load the spring a bit more. place the ball inside the detent and insert the factory spring on top of it. This mod will make the shifts feel solid and firm.

Here is a before and after the 8mm ball

re install the plug with a little sealer on the treads and then put the bolt back in the trans case. Re install the under body and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

Here is the part number for the 8mm ball.

What is the spring part number, as that pic doesn't seem to be our trans, as we don't have the ball bearing in stock form.... I feel replacing the spring at the same time is a no brainer.

I got a lift which is a bit faster. To do the job itself not including the jacking , it is about 40 minutes.

Question

Having my engine dropped to weld the coolant fittings next week.
The car has close to 100k miles and has never exhibited the 2nd gear pop-out in the two years (10k miles) that I've owned it.

Is there any reason I should consider having this mod performed?

Cheap insurance and with the transmission removed with the engine it will be a very easy job to do.
