I hope the guy who invented gearwrenches is a billionare cause they are amazing.

Arrrrghhhh!! Just had to vent! After much toiling, I just got the detent cover to come loose. I didn't get a gearwrench, but now I can see how that will come in handy. taking the allen key off with each turn and trying to reposition it is a pain.

But the good news is that it seems that I am past the hard part (I hope).

Completed...

Just did the mod with a lot of help from the post of Turbotodd (renntrack) and the numerous suggestions from this forum. I post a couple of pictures to show the angle I took and the tool I have used. Hope this help....

The only comments I can do is the bolt was really tight and the cover was tight all the way until it came off.....

Alright, I got everything out and started putting it back together but I couldn't get the detent cover to seat all the way down. Although I held the detent with the pin facing the side of the car as I dropped it in, I suspect that it turned as it went in. Sure enough, I tried to move the gearshift and it wouldn't budge. Even worse is that now I can't get it to come back out with the magnet since it seems it is a little tighter fit.

I going back out to do battle again!

If magnet wont get it you can use a small pair of snap ring pliers for external rings, they expand when you squeeze them, insert into the hole in the part and squeeze while gently pulling it out. should be a pretty loose fit in there, probably jamed it up a bit when trying to seat the cover, not good.

I finally got it repositioned. I still couldn't get it to come all the way out. I would get the detent to the top of the hole but my magnet was just a little to weak to coax it all the way out.

I ended up wrapping a bit of tape on a 6 mm allen key and using that to rotate the detent by feel until it slid further down than other positions I tried. It was a bit tricky to get it right and it took a few tries but I finally got it in position and put everything back together.

It definitely has a more positive feel when going from gear to gear especially 2nd and 3rd.

Lessons learned: 1) A lift would have been a very good thing; 2) The tools you have that you figure will get the job done, won't - be prepared to purchase the right ones; 3) Have patience, be flexible, and have a tolerance for pain especially if you are not utilizing #1; 4) Avoid the whole mess and have your indy shop take care of it for you.

I may make another attempt today if time allows.

Just had my detent installed by a local Porsche mechanic here in Sydney.
I think it's cheap insurance and well worth the price.
