Thank you for the reps and support. I will try to keep doing these little DIY threads and little tricks I picked up along the way. The problem is I dont realize my tricks until I teach someone how to.. This is how this thread came about. A buddy of mine was helping me and picked up on it with a sharp "wait a minute.. Thats not how that came apart", a few times but this one can be done with out a full dis assembly so I posted it.

If the ball sits on top of the detent before the spring, why pull the detent out? Wouldn't you just pull the plug and spring put the ball in then the spring and close it up?
Feel like I'm missing something, why does the detent need to come out?

If you just drop the ball in it may not end up inside the detent. When done in the car I would advise that you pull the detent out and put the ball in and the spring on top of that, maybe a dab of wheel bearing grease in the mix to hold it all together as you can not really get a good look in there with the trans in.

Has anyone done this with the trans still in the car? I attempted it tonight... tried multiple length/depth hex keys, sockets, etc... Couldn't get enough leverage with the only hex key that fit in the space contraint (seems Hercules torqued the cover down) and a breaker bar/extension won't fit...
Any hints from anyone who has successfully performed this, trans in car?
