993 lots keys... info on replacing...

Hi All, I'm asking this question on behalf of a friend who has lost the keys to their '95 993. If they are able to obtain a new key will it be necessary to tow the car to a dealership for reprogramming or will the key just work?

Unless the 993 is different then the later models: 986 Boxster; 996 Turbo; 987 Cayman S; all of which I'm familiar with while the key can be ordered with the right blade and it will git the ignition and even the door lock the engine will not start because the engine controller (or more likely the security controller) does not recognize the new key's RFID.

To "introduce" the new RFID into the car's security system this requires at least a Porsche diagnostics computer and some info from the factory to access the car's security system.

Now I seem to recall that Durametric with the info a cooperating dealer can obtain from the factory can do this.

But before your friend rushes out and buys a Durametric he needs to verify this. And then your friend has to speak with a dealer to see if 1) special info is necessary to access the car's security system, and if yes then 2) ask if the dealer can obtain that info and supply him with that info in a format that can be used with Durametric.

All other IDs present need to be erased, too. There are only a few slots for RFIDs and the SOP is when the dealer replaces a bad key he first removes the RFID of the bad key to make room for the RFID of the new key. In the one or two cases where I had to replace a key I had the car at the dealer and left all keys wtih the dealer so the tech could match each key to its RFID and remove the RFID of the bad/dead key.
