Fixing 84 911 Targa

The odometer stopped rolling when I hit the reset button. I heard it is a small gear that needs replacing. Has anyone done this and is it hard to do? THe cost I heard to fix this is over $200. I know parts are expensive but isn't that kind of pricey for a repair. Any ideas??

Speedo

Look for a speedometer repair shop in your area, this is not an uncommon problem. The Speedometer/odometer gears are some type of plastic/nylon and they deteriorate with age and get brittle. A good speedometer repair shop will get a VDO repair kit, which will have all the plastic/nylon gears and wheels that are in the speedometer and they all get changed. Then you should be good for another 15 years. We do a couple of 911SC and Carrera speedometers a month in our shop and that price is pretty close with parts and labor.

Ouch, that's good incentive to remember not to hit the reset button while moving. I have a 1980 SC with a 160 mph speedo. Is this just a face change or should I have doubts about the original miles because there is no doccumentation to back it up?

If you doubt the original milege, run a CARFax report with the VIN number. It costs about $20.00 I think but its gives you a history of the vehicle such as the mileage and when and if it has been in any accidents.

It is a 1980, carfax doesn't go back that far. I think they start with 81.

Type in the VIN and they will tell you if they have anything on the car before you purchase it for the details. This way you don't waste money and you can at least see if anything is offered. My 84 had 3 records. 2 smogs and 1 state inspection when it entered the state of CA. So if it had any inspections or smogs it would show.

I tried but it said I have to have a 17 digit VIN. They started in 1981.
