another question "Fuel Pump Operation"

This pertains to my '74 911.

question for anyone. this may be a dumb question but i will ask anyway. after taking out fuel pump i took top off and "bumped" it with 12v. the pump spins. i put top back on. then i put hose on intake to see if it would "pump" gas. nothing happened. it would not pump. pump gets warm so i stopped. i can fill pump up with gas and it will run thru with outlet fitting taken off. if i take outlet fitting off it will not pump out either. what kind of "pressure" comes out of pump when it's pumping. does it just help the gas along or does it "shoot" it along. do i have a bad fuel pump ?
