1980 911SC questions

Hi guys new to the forum here. I bought a 1980 911 SC with 92k on it. It had just been stripped and repainted. Engine rebuilt, new suspension. My question is i have been saving up to do some work to it and I am wondering if you guys consider it worthwhile to drop a turbo in. I would like to keep it as stock looking as possible to retain the great lines the car already has. Also the leather driving seat is starting to look worn out and tired. Any suggestions for best way to handle redoing/ reworking it.

Thanks for your time/advice,
Mike

Have you switched to SSIs yet?? What was done to your engine?? A bit late to add a turbo, as you need lower comp. pistons to start.

There used to be a few companies that offered superchargers for the 3.0 and 3.2s and you didn't need to change engine internals or gearing. Try Air Cooled Classics @ 865-671-4914, they used to have supercharging kits up to around 400 hp for these cars. You will definitely sacrifice reliability though, and these engines are pricey to rebuild. A better option is a 3.6 993 engine swap and get almost as much horsepower as a 3.0 supercharged, with the ability to supercharge that later if you wanted even more power. That doesn't sound like that was the route you were wanting to go with keeping it close to stock, but these old 3.0 and 3.2 engines can't make major horsepower easily like todays engines anyway.

I'd put an efi kit on with bigger and higher compression pistons. The problem with a lot of power in an SC is the tranny and rear traction. Stock 915 trannys can only handle about 300hp, my tranny has been built to handle a bit more. Lightening the car makes a big difference too, especially the flywheel and pressure plate.

don't do it. I think you're asking for trouble and unintended consequences. You would need to rethink the trans, exhaust, suspension, brakes, linkages, if expanded out to a 3.2 engine from your 3.0. adding a turbo will stress out other systems and become a money pit for you. keep the sc as an sc. spend the money for a 930 as your weekend driver. drive the sc everyday. best mod for fun off the top of my head would be adding fabspeed airbox and borla exhaust. the 3.0 is probably the best 911 engine ever. with new pistons and jackets and some other internal stuff replaced at 160k, my 3.0 was running strong at 325k. oh, air box valve and carerra tensioners for sure. I'd forget the turbo....

I would agree with judgejon, the best modification I did to my 1980 911SC Weissach was to add a GHL Muffler and the Fabspeed Airbox. Car was so much better and the sound was unbeleivable and these upgrades can be accomplished in less than an hour...bolt on and go.

I totally agree.
I had virtually same mods on my 79 911sc. Had to open engine re main bearing at 160k. Oh well. Kept car to 325k, drove it every day. 3.0 engine best air cooled, period. Don't mess it up. Too much other stuff needed as noted, like trans, diff, brakes. 911sc is awesome. Put on fab speed and borla and drive it at solid rpms. Don't lug the engine. Keep it above 2500 in ALL gears and you will have many many happy miles. Really.
