Valve Adjustment

Hello all. I've been enjoying (understatement) my '87 Targa for a few months now (and apx. 1K miles).

Has about 63K on the ODO. Records from prior owner indicate valve adjustment done at around 58K. I'm going to have new plugs put in, and some other maintenance work done for good measure.

I believe valve adjustments are done every 15K miles. I'm told, however, by my dealer that I should have the valves adjusted again. For a dealer, they're reliable and I've done business with them for a long while. I'm wondering if they recommend the valve adjustment to ensure it was done properly (or at all)?

Should I decline the valve adjustment until 75K miles (which could be for many, many years)?

Cheers

Scott C is infamous around these parts
If they are overly noisy, then get the adjustment. If not, then don't waste your money doing it early. 15k is the correct interval.

I wouldn't worry about the time interval.

Thanks Scott C.

Any tips on what I'd be listening for? I presume at idle I'd here some sort of metallic-like chatter...

I'd stick to the 15k mile interval. I bought mine with 68k miles 3 years ago and now have 103k. I didn't know when the previous job was done so I waited for 75k miles to do it so as to keep a reference for the future. I then did it at 90k and the next one will be at 105k - very soon at the rate I put miles on it.

I'd take the 58k record from the previous owner as 60k and not do any valve adjustment until 75k miles. At that time you'll get an oil change and other things as stated in the maintenance manual - do what is asked of in the manual at that time to have a base reference for the future. That would be my advise. Enjoy the car!
