Modernizing an '89 Targa...

Hey all, so here's the deal. My dad has a 1989 Porsche Carrera Targa with 36,000 miles on it. He keeps it really in mint condition and rarely drives it. I guess you could say its a garage car. But I have plans for it in the future, if he does not sell it, I know that it will eventually become my car someday (FYS thats the "Targa Theory"). So if my "Targa Theory" follows through in a few years, once I'm out of college, I'm gonna love driving this car. But of course like any other hotblooded male I want it to be sick as ****. Not just classy, its full of class. Is there anyway to make these cars better than than they are stock? Since I don't know much about modding these cars, anyone care to give an example setup? I would obviously like more horsepower than the stock 214ish I think it has. A cooler looking body kit, CAI, maybe with dual exhaust. The shifter is really clunky and long. Shifting in this car is like clink-clank-clink-clank. Any sport/shortthrow shifter option? What would the best suspension setup be? I want this car to stand out, since it's just as good as a brand new car. How can I make this car up to par (at least somewhat) with new age Carreras?

I would not do anything to alter the looks of the car. You could add different suspension to lower it, a short shift kit to tightten up your shifting and an exhaust to make it sound better. As for a body kit, you will be taking value away from the car IMO.

I honestly hope you don't end up with that car, as it sounds like you are planning on destoying a concours car. Do you even know that is the last of the "real" 911s?? Just screw up a Honda and stay away from your fathers car!!!

Hey I know everything I need to know about this car. Yes I do know that its the last generation of air cooled engine cars. And yes I do know that it is a classic Porsche not meant to be riced out. Yes I do know that everything is harmonious and balanced in the way in which this car was made and performed. I understand this okay. Don't get the impression that I'm a spunky little kid wanting to rice out a good car. That's not my intention. By body kit I didn't mean "Ricer" body kit with like gills and vents and scraping the floor n such. I was referring to Porsche bumbers, side skirts, and rear bumpers that could accomodate a dual exhaust if I wanted to. I got this idea from Porsche Magazine, where some old 60year old modernized his 993 Turbo and put on a body kit, and it looked really good. Oh and Racerbvd, I don't really think you hope I don't get this car. I think you were just trying to sound smart and conservative on an online forum.

You can think what you want, but to take a concours last model 911 and fuch it up is stupid!! I kinow my old Porsches, and what ones to modify, from what you said about your daddy's only an idiot would do that. For the record, I also have a clean 88 Targa, I had plans for it when I bought it, but since it was a unmolested, I haven't added the factory wing & front spoiler, that I already have, but I'm sure at some point I will, but at least they are correct for my car. Please don't compareyour fathers 89 to the new cars, his was built by hand, the new ones don't hold a candle to it. BTW, I'm building a bad *** 914-6 clone, so I'm not as conservative as you think, and if you ever bothered to reseach me, you would know that I have a pretty good idea when it comes to older Porches, old chevys, well, I own one, but am weak. Before you ask asinine questions and make dumbass statements, you should understand whom you are talking about. If you knew me, you would know that I have refused to sell my cars to people who said they wanted to **** them up like you!!

Listen I'm not trying to be rude to you dude. But you really are giving me the typical, though I know you're not trying, "I'm a smartass" response that are common among online forums. You said, "I honestly hope you don't get your dads car." Well that statement right there bothered me a lot. You have no right to say something like that so quick, okay? As I didn't know/research you, you didn't even inquire as to what my plans were. You just jumped to the conclusion that I want to "fuch" up my dads car? C'mon man, don't be like that. And then you say, "Do you even know...?" and that came off as snobbish, even if you didn't mean it to be like that. So you think that changing the style of bottom body and perhaps upgrading the exhaust system a bit is ****ing up this car? I hate your quick accusations of me ****ing up a car. I believe my ideas and thoughts are for the better of the car. Why? Because I want a semi unique 911. Okay, so now you can argue "Its a classic car it's already unique blah blah". I got it. But man, I can't want to spice it up a bit? Hm, I don't recall comparing my dad's car to new cars. I do however remember saying something like "at least close to new 911's". Okay, so I worded that statement in a way to make readers think I want to make an 80's car up to the level of a modern car. My bad. I should have stated that I just wanted to upgrade a bit and style a bit, instead of "modernizing." And what other dumbass statements did I make besides honest to god questions that I hoped would answered well. I'm sorry I don't research members of forums before I post...No need to get personal okay.

Without trying to sound like a know it all, I would suggest you learn to drive a rear engined car with the H/P it has now. I drive a 160hp early 911 and have beat many late model 911's on the track and autocross. I would possibly do some shock and swaybar changes and a slight lowering to the car. If you decide to do a 2 out exhaust, don't cut the original apron. Buy a new or used one and have it cut and painted. I am far from a purist, but I would not be drilling holes or glueing body panels on to what sounds like a pristine car. My car can be put back to original condition any time, by saving all original pieces. Just some "old guy's" opinion.

Thanks dude. I probably couldn't afford it now anyway. I'm talking about wayyy in the future. But that's right, I drive it now and then and am comfortable in the car, though I havn't at all gone to its limits, I can't really do, nor will, do that on the streets.

What I really can't believe is there were 30 bids on that toilet. No accounting for taste.

Targa Theory leave the body stock. If anything maybe add the "factory" front lower rubber lip and or Carrera Tail if it doesn't ;t have that already.
If you are thinking any other mods on that garage queen I am going to have to agree with the masses and tell you to go get a Honda and get the ricer junk out of your system before this 911 winds up in your hands.
Please post a picture of the car the way it is now ASAP

Just imagine a brand new completely stock black 89 911 Targa off the lot. No spoiler or premium wheels or anything. There's no ricer junk in my system. OMG why can you guys not understand this?? I want a nicer sounding exhaust, a high quality and approved by porsche purist's exhaust system for a car of this age. Sheesh.

You could do a cat bypass for starters. Check out fabspeed, they even have sound clips of different set-ups. Good luck with your project.
