Exclamation Thinking about adding this to my garage !

'84 Targa

Recently my love for the oldskool 911's have emerged and I found this car when I was surfing around. I really like air cooled 930's but I'm a total newbie when it comes to these cars. Could you guys give me any heads up to watchout for.?. And a short description of the car with pros/cons would be awesome so I won't be emptying my pockets to an endless blackhole...

This is the car BTW,

'84 Targa with 36K miles and looks to be in pretty good shape from the pics...

http://www.sahibinden.com/displayitem.php?a=4707774

P.S. How does the targa top works ? Is it a solid top like the ones on early camaro, corvette t-tops or a stretching tent like on a convertible ?

Thanks a lot guys,

Damn, sad to see such nasty mods on a very low mileage '84. Almost looks like a replica. My advice when going for the old school ones - go with original stuff.

Thanks a lot guys,
Hi Clubber, I like the 930 as well. I've worked my way thru the ranks of 9xx's and the last car I had was a Targa (964). The Targa Top is a folding metal structure with several layers of fabric and metal inserts. When folded should fit in you forward compartment. My '91 C2 Targa couldn't accommodate the folded top in the forward compartment, but this one should.

I can't read what the website says about the 930, but all I see is dual exhaust and wheels that have the paint removed and polished. What else has been done to it?

Check the VIN numbers in both places as well as the engine serial and model and make sure that it is a 930.

It kind of looks like a turbo rear (with the wide fenders and wing) and a narrow-body front. Totaled, cut in half and glued together with another car? Have you talked to the dealer? And that exhaust....

Looks like both bumpers are wrong. If this were a US car, both front and rear bumpers would have the accordian or pleated pieces at the sides of the bumper to body. See attached photo. According to a short search, there were only 423 unit build that year.

Any history on the car???

To the best of my knowledge Porsche didn't make any Targa versions of the turbo in the 80's aside from a couple of test mules where they found the lack of torsional strength of the body undesireable. They did slap the turbo flares, tail, and brakes on models for the "Turbo look" as an option starting in '86. Worth more if done by the factory, but these cars were slower than the normal non-turbo body style due to the extra drag and added weight (with same 3.2L engine). Also, if it has a turbo engine in it, its a transplant. They never had a 3.2L turbo engine in production cars in the 80's.... rather 3.0L and 3.3Ls. IMSA series 962s ran a 3.2L.

I DO know that Targa and Cabriolets have a torsional dampener on the rear most engine tray to try to stiffen things up. I have a 3.2L in my longnose with one just for that purpose.

They made a 930 Targa in 87/88 maybe 89.

Both of them look pretty cut up. The second one is definately not a 73 that spoiler that raises up came about I believe in 89-90 MY. They could be decent cars (and fun) if everything checks out on a PPI, but as for being stock, both are massively modified, which often=caution.

My 2 cents

I would look for a more orignal car that had not been messed with. In the early 1980's vintage there ought to be a lot of opportunities. Would it be practical (from import / customs perspective) to expand your search area to Europe?

It's a 73. They never had a 964 Turbo-look targa, you can see in the wheel shot the brakes are not from a 964, a 964 would has more of a "finished" center section and would have a button to raise the spoiler, and last no post ?77? had a speaker in the dash.

Make sure if you get a car with a turbo engine, that that engine is is tip top condition. And EVERYTHING checks out good. The entire value of that car (practically ) is in that turbo engine. Get a bad one, and you wont believe how much $$ you can throw into rebuilding a turbo engine! For what it's worth (I've had 2) I'm not a big fan of the turbo (or at least the ones I've had). Putting around town, I felt like I had had more power in 3.0 liter 911's I've owned. Then, jump on the accelerator and it litterally felt like I was getting rear-ended from the power. But that wouldnt happen till right around 4K RPM. Not a fun feeling to me. I saw my life flash before my eyes several times in that car.
Good luck if your going around a corner when the turbo comes on... The suckky part is, you WANT to drive that car fast too... I've talked to quite a few guys who supercharged 3.2's and loved them. Told me they left turbo's in the dust, and had zero lag. The lag is the killer (in my opinion). Not very civilized... in fact, maybe the opposite. My 2 cents. ;o)
