Not sure how to answer your post. I think we all need some more info to ensure we can provide useful comments:
1. What do you plan to do with the car? (DD, weekend backroads, occasional track car; other?)
2. How much are you willing to spend?
3. How handy are you doing basic repair and maintenance?
4. Do you have a local mechanic that you can trust and is highly experienced with this particular model?
5. How much do you care about the fit, finish and freshness of the car. Do you want an 'as new' car? Or something that is more reflective of it's age?
I think these questions help to frame the responses to your inquiry. FWIW, I bought one about 9 months ago having lusted for one on and off for many many years. In order, my answers are:
1. Weekend driver. Might take it to work 1 or 2 days/month;
2. I didn't have much in the way of spending restrictions. Based on my answers (below), I was relatively open on the price;
3. I am somewhat handy, but I expected (and still do) that any significant issue that arose with the car would be tended to by my local mechanic;
4. And I do have a local mechanic nearby who specializes in classic Porsche's. So, other than the cost of maintenance, I had no worries about ensuring that any significant problem could be handled. For basic maintenance and upkeep, I am able to handle most issues. My limitation is more regarding my time than skill for the basics;
5. I really preferred a 'new' car. And I would only buy a white over black one (all my cars are white over black - some obvious personality disorder .

All the right questions Verde.

Once you figure out what type of car you want your 930 to be you will be more equipped to go out and look for one. Drive as many as you can before buying it. Decide if you want an all stock car or if mods like bigger turbo, larger wheels/tires, intercoolers, suspension upgrades to coil overs, etc are important to you. If you want to eventually do these types of mods get one that is already modded and worked out so you dont end up paying $10k-20K+to do these things. Other accessories to keep in mind: sport seats, racing seats, 5pt harnesses, roll bars. Anyway you get the idea.

Keep a nice allowance on the side for unexpected expenditures with this car. Its old...you never know when something can break down.

When you do finally get it if you like the big 15inch wheel with 345 wide tire look give me a call I have a great set I dont need anymore.

Good luck with the search. I spent about 3 years looking for one and had a great time while doing it.

Verde,
Who do you go to around SF Bay for 930 work?

Plexiform,
Why did you get rid of your STI? Despite my incurable Porscheophilia, I have been contemplating one for some Gymkhana action on the way to work.
