964 Turbo as a daily driver

Looking to get out of my 1996 Viper B/W GTS and into a 964 Turbo. Before the Viper I had an 1986 911 Turbo which I drove daily(AC was not great in Miami) that was my main complaint.

I know the cooling/tranny, etc are much improved over the older 911 Turbos.

I would only be driving like 25 miles a day. I do not drive the Viper daily but my next car I would.

thanks,

Larry

As long as the car has been properly maintained I see no reason why the 964 Turbo would not make an excellent daily driver.

My only reservation for it as a DD is the time it takes for the damn thing to warm up you drive it half hour then park it for 1/2 an hour and now the stupid thing will take another 10 minutes of easy driving before getting on it...

I beg to differ my friend there is no reason why a 964 turbo wouldn't make a good daily driver( normal drving..that is )

Daily Driver

Thanks for all the responces. I have had the Viper GTS since 2000 and just feeling an itch for something different.

As stated had an 1986 911Turbo for a couple of years and loved it(other than the tranny and AC)

Actually the Viper just sits in the garage, really not the best car for Miami
climate. Anyone considering a trade for a 964 Turbo let me know,

Here is a pic with the IMSA RX7 I got. Will get better pics tom.

Just using my Nissan nismo for daily driving

My cousin has a 993 and those Air-Cooled motors cool down very quick ad take a very long time to warm up.

If you live in florida I cain't see an issue with cooldown and warm up time if your car is set up properly. Come on!

Think long and hard about a 965 daily driver. CIS can get very expensive to maintain and not all shops are good at fixing it.

Why is the maintenance so high?

isnt it basic...Oil Change,Spark Plugs, etc...?

No, not with the CIS injection system. It is very tempermental and complicated. When Porsche decided to build a turbocharged version of the 964 they did not want to spend the money to make a motronic version of the 3.3 or 3.6 L engines. So they adapted the CIS system from the early 930's.

Anyway with any 15-17 year old daily driver, you will have issues.

Or you could spend the money to EFI the engine like I did. Now I have modern day reliability, 650 HP and the cool old school look.

That depends on how much power you are looking for. Figure on 9K for a basic system up to 50K for a total engine build. My engine was torn down to the case and fully built. Titanium internals, carrera intake the works. It is a Protomotive engine.

We service a fair number of these cars in the orange county area. They can be reliable cars.

As with anything of this vintage conditon is key when buying a car. Low mileage cars are not neccaserily better than average mileage cars. Low mileage cars rarely get driven and they rarely get maintenance done.

So dont be a afraid of a average mileage car that has been carefully maintained.

Parts are expensive and knowledgeable techs who really know the cars are few and far between.

This is an older design that has been updated throughout the years. With that being said they can sometimes be quirky..

In my opionion probably one of the best looking aircooled models out there.
