AT a car meet this weekend, a porsche driver was telling me that I should redline the car each time I drive it. I got it to 7200rpm on the weekend drive. Do you guys agree? open it up each time? Better for the engine than not reving high rpm?

That's pretty intense. Does this guy own a local Porsche engine rebuild shop? maybe every once in a while to disperse carbon but every drive..............scary.

 

Redlining is not good for the engine. Remember these engines have 9mm rod bolts, smaller than the previous years. Even my '72 911T had 10mm. If you stretch the bolts, you'll sping a rod bearing...

 

Redline it every drive, I would not. I have a 91 C4 with 106k on the clock. I do use the full RPM range very often though and think nothing of running up in the mid to low 6k's running down a straight stretch as I set up a corner and get hard on the binders.

Of course this is from someone who has rebuilt his engine (only top end) and would like to avoid that (or any other major repair) for the near future.

I just fear me hitting the wrong gear and doing an overrev as I row thru the gearbox like a sailor on his first leave in Bankok.

What's the matter with you guys??? YOU are driving a 911 or 964 or whatever. The redline is there for your pleasure and enjoyment. I'm not a Porshce mechanic nor do I own a rebuild shop. I have an 87 911 with a lot of mods and it now redlines at 7200 (original factory was 6200) and I'm not afraid of redlining it at any time.......I have 210K on the car and 110K on this engine and its as good as the day I had it rebuilt......drive your cars!!!!!!!!!!!

 

just make sure its warm first .
properly warm .
oil flowing through the radiator warm ........


i do it regular in my 964 , but have never really noticed if it happens everytime i drive it . i suspect not .

my 997 has a button for red-line driving .

 

I drive my cars pretty hard. But they are suppose to be driven hard.

just make sure the maintenance is done on time or more frequently if you do drive it hard

 

Believe it or not.

But in the 2nd edition Porsche's buyers guide by Randy Leffingwell, he states, "The truth is that if you don't run these engines, you are doing more harm then good".

He goes on mentioning that this was a problem for first time buyers who were shifting below 3,0000 rpm thinking they were being safe but in turn not running them up is doing something harmful.

This problem was added in the 964 year and applies to the 993 and 996.

And to add my own personal opinion running a hard can usually create more power. Why do you think it helps pass smog sometimes.
