Dissimilar front/rear tire side profiles

Has anyone noticed how the front tires have this pointy lip around the side, about 1/3-1/2" from the edge of the wheel of the tire, but it is absent in the rear tires? Same tire, different widths. Just curious about the different side profile.

I'm thinking it's the width of the wheel that makes the tire appear different based on its mounting.
