991 Turbo or R8 V10+
991 Turbo or R8 V10+
Please advise the reasons you've picked 991 TT over R8.
I thought I have these below:
1. Speed
2. Space
3. Because it is a Porsche
4. Tech
5. Handling
6. New R8 is around the corner
7. PDK
For R8:
1. Look
2. Audi interior
3. Sound
4. Price
5. NA
6. Exclusivity
7. Smoother Ride
Any other?

I considered the R8 V10 but the Porsche was simply better in nearly every respect. The clincher was when I went to the on-line configurator for the R8 and couldn't order a color combination I wanted.
For 911TTS:
- I think it looks better than the R8. HATE those stupid "blades"
- It's faster
- It handles better
- It's got room for kids in the back. HUGE!
- It's a Porsche not an Audi
- transmission is better
- I prefer the 991 interior to the R8's
For R8
- Looks more exotic
- Lovely view of the engine

BTW, the new S-tronic in the V10+ is every bit as good as the PDK. The V10+ can be ordered with manual transmission, if you're a stick guy.
The business about "it's a Porsche" is exactly what the Ferrari guys say. If image is important, the R8 has a every bit as much "street cred" as the turbo.
The 991TTS is clearly faster than the R8 but how often are you going to track the car, because that's the only place where you'll be able to use that difference effectively. On the street, one car is faster than 99.9% of all other vehicles, the other is faster than 99.0%. As far as handling, same comment, but the steering feel of the Audi is better and you'll feel that at normal speeds.
A new R8 is about a year away and that is an advantage to some since you can get substantial discounts on R8's.
Having owned a number of Porsche Turbos and R8s, my own experience is that the R8 provides a far more emotional connection - part is the rarity, part the engine and sound, part is the unique interior and exterior looks and part is that, like the Porsche, it is an "everyday supercar". Frankly, I preferred my 997.2 C2S to any of the 996 and 997 turbos I owned.
If you had a turbo before try something different. What going for the R8 is the na engine and the manual tranny. Those features will probably be extinct soon and may make the current model more desirable. Kinda like the current 991 gt3 vs the mk2 gt3 which seems to hold resale because of the manual tranny and that race engine.
One needs to apply personal weighting factors to this list. For example, if you need to have a back seat for your little children, there is no question which is the better car. Alternately, if you love the immediacy and connection of a superb NA engine/transmission, there is no doubt which way to go. If the infotainment piece is important than the Porsche is a better choice (although the B&O in the R8 is far better than the Bose; get the Burmeister if music is important to you)

991 is the way to go, then now the question will be which 991....S, GT3, TT or TTS.....

Such a tough decision. The mid-engine, low-slung exotic factor of the R8 is quite tempting. I found it incredibly neutral and forgiving at MRLS. Truly an everyday exotic.
However the Porsche is so quick, given a choice I would test drive the Porsche first so I could get an up-to-date feel vs. the 997.1 automatic I reviewed.

Suggestion: if this car is for the street, try to get some seat time driving the turbos and a PSE equipped S, you might find yourself saving some $'s for his college education.
BTW, my daughter just turned 27 and even though I drove her around in a slew of 911's when she was young, she is in love with her Prius
. I guess that's called bad parenting.
Turbo S vs R8
First I must say that my fun car was a 11 GT3. After driving a couple different GT3's since 2005 I must admit I was ready for a change. So a couple of months ago I drove both cars and here were my thoughts.
The R8... I drove the R8 with both transmissions. I love the lines of the R8 and the interior is wonderful. There were 2 things that I just could not get past. 1) the automatic transmission just felt odd to me. It had a strange hesitation between gears that seemed forced. 2) The storage was non existent. My wife and I like to take 3 or 4 day road trips and that just would not work with the R8.
The Turbo S... As you can imagine the Turbo S was a huge change from the GT3 in so many ways. I had never driven a PDK or a turbo car. The power is delivered so differently but not in a bad way. I think the PDK transmission is quite a masterpiece and enjoye it much more than I thought I would. Now the kicker for me is the trunk and interior space. It allows us the travel that we enjoy so much. I know that sounds a bit silly to choose a car like this for space but it is certainly a huge part of the consideration for me (us).
So the bottom line for me was the Turbo S... Got it a couple of weeks ago and it has been a blast to learn to drive well. No regrets...

Just curious - did you drive a 2014 R8 with S-tronic transmission (dual clutch) or an older R8 with R-tronic (single clutch) and if is was the s-tronic, did you have the sport button engaged?
I went thru the same process this year back and forth between R8 V10 and 991 turbo.
I like both cars but decided on the R8 because of the V10 and mid engine layout. Can't go wrong either way.

Thanks Alan R-tronic... This was in the non-sport mode and regular city driving. I did take it on the freeway and engage the sport button and I will say it was much better. I really do like the R8's a lot. Wifey just packs to much crap to take trips in one.

. Just gorgeous - and that steering wheel!
