I see precisely what you mean. It's the car. The 991TTS motor runs much quieter than the 997.1TT's. This brash, gargly sound you are referring to was simply the sound of a Mezger engine with a Cargraphic exhaust. A friend of mine alro ran this setup. Fantastic sound, which I also favour over the 991TTS'.
Even though the GMG is very free flowing, it is *relatively* quiet. For an X-pipe exhaust with race cats and only 2 mufflers, I was a bit disappointed myself when I heard it. You might have to shop around for something else. I'm thinking FVD (their loudest mufflered version, as this will alter the sound emitted by the car. If you go for the X-pipe, you might as well stay with the GMG). Going for an X-Pipe without mufflers at all would also be another option, but you might get that straight pipe lawnmower sound, which I'm sure isn't what you are looking for!
The start ups are quieter on all 991s, TTS or C4S etc. I miss the crackle of the cold start on the 997.1TT too. The Cargraphic made a beautiful sound, that crackling, hollow sounding gurgle with a slight whiz of the turbos! I know EXACTLY what you mean. The newer cars just have a different start-up sequence… A shame really.
Hope you get it figured out!
Y.
I'm glad you understand what I'm trying to relate. But, I'll have to "live" with the car for a while to see what I think.
Unfortunately, the day after I 1st posted about this it snowed/freezing rain here in CT-New England. Then, we got another 2 feet last week which I just finished cleaning up ... and another 12 inches is forecast for tonight.
Main roads are clear enough to drive my car, but my 1/4 mile driveway is pretty icey. Sure I can get down, but not sure I can get up. So, the car's in the garage for another week (at least) before I can get the car out again.
But, I'm sure you are correct ... the 997 and 991 are 2 different animals from a standpoint of exhaust sound.

Hi,
GMG is on my shortlist, what are your thoughts after a few months of ownership?
I have to disagree with the "high pitched Ferrari" sound comment about the Tubi. We have two versions of the Tubi, a Street system with 200 cell HJS cats, and a cat-less Race version. Both actually have a very deep sound, my personal favorite being the Street version. Here's two videos to give you an idea of how they both sound. Both systems are absolutely mild inside the cabin, almost to the point that it's unbelievable how little they increase cabin noise.
As for craftsmanship, the Tubi systems are all 100% stainless steel and hand-crafted, welded, and assembled. Tubi is also a company that does OEM work for Ferrari, Maserati, and a few other OEM applications. In fact, all Ferrari add-on dealer-installed sport exhaust systems are made by Tubi. The quality is there, believe me. The Porsche exhaust systems are designed and tested by us here, prior to final manufacturing at Tubi's facility in Italy.
Of course, the best option is to hear them in person if possible, but hopefully this helps.
Hi,

Yeah, I've had some miles/months with the new car. Some things about the new 991 TT I like a great deal, some not so much. But, that's for another thread.
The GMG does not sound anything like the Cargraphic did on my 997.1 TT. The GMG does not have the loud sounds I experienced with the Cargraphic. But, there may be other reasons.
1st, my 997.1 TT was a cab, so less insulation in the top made for more sound IMO. The new car is a coupe and I think more top insulation (and perhaps elsewhere) make the exhaust note much more quiet in the cabin.
I tend to run the car in Sport Mode most of the time (except on the Slab, when I leave it in N mode). In the SM, there are snorts and crackles on deceleration. WOT is pretty loud, but I'd have to be outside the car to tell you how it really sounds. Folks do turn to look at the car when I go by ... even at a slow pace. This could be due to the car and not necessarily the exhaust note. ??
I do miss the sound of the turbos spooling up that I experienced with the Cargraphic, tho. Could be the car more than the exhaust.
All in all, I'm OK with the exhaust. Would be nice to have the ability and funds to go thru several to find which one sounded best. Unfortunately, I don't that option.
One more thing. In Normal mode, I feel some droning in the cabin at 50-65 mph (forgot the rpms). Not much, but I like it better when the car is in SM.
For the best and most sound from a 991TT or TT "S" you will want a full 3" system such as our 991TT X-Pipe exhaust. The new Porsche DFI engine in the current 991 Turbo and 997.2TT is extremely quiet compared to previous generations and it sounds best with a non muffled X-Pipe, such as the one we designed for the 991TT pictured below. In our opinion, the engine is simply too quiet for mufflers and even with no mufflers, the sound does not approach the level of the previous generation 996TT and 997.1TT cars with an equal system.
Our 991TT exhaust can be used with the OEM cats or our own hi-flow cats utilizing HJS cores. It is also available with OEM tip outlets, but that will reduce the sound level. From our experience and testing of the 991TT, dual 3" tips provide enhanced volume over the OEM tips and sound better too.
We have other options such as ceramic coating and forum member discounts.
