Too Much Power For Pirelli

After doing my last mods(plenum, diverter valves, bmc air filter) when I launch my car I'm losing traction on my oem pirelli's. Traction control light comes on and I can feel the back end getting loose. So after I burn these rear tires up I want to switch to stickier tires. I'm thinking of either the Pilot SuperSports or the Pilot Sport Cup 2's. I am leaning towards the SC 2's as if I do any more mods, I think the SuperSports might not be sticky enough. BTW my car already has GIAC stage 2 and a Tubi exhaust. The combination of my last mods definitely added some more hp/tq to cause tire spin.

R888s are always great to help with traction issues. Many of our "9 second file" 997.2 Turbos switch to these tires for the same reason.

Are the tires and surface warm when this happens?

Yes. The conditions/location is also the exact same. Difference in mileage on tires would be a maximum of 75 miles, no track use, just daily cruising. Only variable changed has been performance mods.

Any reason to go with R888's over Pilot Sport Cup 2's? I still need the tires to have daily drivability. Located in south FL so cold isn't a issue.

Cold is not a problem, but rain performance of track oriented tires could be vs the Pilot Super Sport or P Zeros. Got to believe that with your power even with sub-optimal P Zeros from a stop you are unlikely to see anybody's taillights.

I can't speak to either personally, but in S Florida, I would not feel comfortable driving on any R-compound low tread-depth tire in a rain storm. The risk of hydroplaning is just too great. I have heard great things about the Michelin PSS tires.

Definitely give the Michelin Pilot Super Sports a shot.

R888 will definitely be stickier, but not a very good choice for a daily cruising car at all.

I'm pretty sure the R888 is not available in the right 20" sizes. I'd go with either the PSS or the PSC2. But remember, the PSC2 is no picnic to drive in the wet. For that reason, it's PSS all day long for me.

I'm making >600 wheel hp & tq on my 997.2 and my MPSS tires can't apply the power to the road when launching. The turbo spins in 1st and 2nd gears (I don't have a LSD). Best 0-60 we've achieved is 2.9s and 100 in 6.2s. I was told to switch over to the R888 if 0-60 was really that important, but I'd then be putting added stress on the PDK. I'm staying with my MPSS, great tires so far.

My PZeros also struggle with putting down all the post from my GIAC Stage 2 991 TTS. I will be switching to Pilot Super Sports when they are work down. I won't do an R compound tire like the MPSC2s because the car is a daily driver and I will not risk the lack of rain traction and hydroplaning that R compound tires have.

I think I'm going to go with the Pilot Super Sports. Even though I rarely drive in the rain, I would be to concerned if I was out and it started storming. Living in south FL these thunderstorms can come out of no where. I was leaning towards the Pilot Sport Cup 2's but I'll relay on others experience with them when it comes to rain. Just too stressful if I was out and got "caught" in a storm. I appreciate everyone's input!

Just tried ordering the Pilot Super Sports from Tirerack and the rears in the OEM size are back ordered and not currently available. They are not available on DiscountTire.com either.

Grrrr

Has anyone put 315s on the tears instead???

No I haven't heard of anyone doing that but I'm not sure how that would work on the stock wheels. I'm sure one of the wheel/mod companies could chime in and let you know. Why not just wait till they're in stock? It's a pretty common tire for all the big online vendors. I would call tirerack and ask what the ETA is. They have been really good when I've asked them questions in the past. Unless I needed new tires urgently I would wait for the OEM sizes to become available somewhere.

Michelin has been backordered on the OEM sizes, as well as a few popular up-sizes (325) since early March. There is no planned ETA on them, and they just don't seem to care to ramp up production at all to fulfill that backorder. Same goes for TireRack - who we work closely with, they have bugged Michelin for an updated ETA since March - with no solid concrete date for restocking.

If you plan to wait, keep that mind - you may be waiting for quite a long time.
