NoFlyZone 991.2 Results

Hi all,

Yesterday was the AZ NoFlyZone event as I'm sure many of you know. Last Saturday I picked up a 991.2 TTS in Long Beach. I spent the week driving it as much as possible to break it in somewhat before NoFlyZone this weekend. I did what I could and then dropped the car off to By Design Sam so that he could give it some love before I headed out. IC’s, full Kline inconel exhaust and headers, and intake. No tune of course, because there isn’t one available yet. I picked the car up Friday night from him at around 5:00 and headed out from L.A.

The trip there was fine, but I have to say I sometimes I do wonder what’s wrong with me with taking a brand new car to an event like this, but whatever, it’s what they’re for I suppose. My initial impression was that the car was not hugely different…it definitely sounded better and felt stronger, but there was so much traffic getting out of town, I could not tell much.

As I got into clearer traveling I could open the car up a bit and could feel that there was actually a big difference in performance. It seemingly wasn’t as violently different as when I got my 991.1 back from Sam, but it was very, very strong.

Saturday morning it was cool and the air was good. At 9:00 AM it was 56 degrees, 44% humidity, and the DA was 600 feet. These type of conditions lasted all day, with my weather station never reading above 62 degrees, the humidity dropped to around 20% +/-, and the DA hung right in the 800-1000 ft mark all day. So conditions were very nice.

The first run right out of the gate was 166.543. I was way stoked with just that and followed it up with a 166.297. I was happy enough with those results and would have been perfectly content at that.

I ended up being stuck with those numbers being my fastest until very late in the day, I guess around 2:30 and then the car started picking up again. I did a 166.9, then started knocking off 167’s. Mind you, the weather did not change very much during the day. I think a big difference was that I could keep a little heat in the tires because less people were running. But also I’m pretty sure the car was adjusting too because it was just getting faster and faster.

All of a sudden I started knocking off 169’s repeatedly. There would be a 167 every few runs, but a lot of 169’s were coming. I couldn’t hardly believe it really. Again, I thought that’s as good as it gets and I’m 100% excited and thrilled with those numbers.

The second to last run of the day the car pulled a 170.068. I texted that to Sam and told him my work here is done! It wasn’t though, I tried to beat it, but only ran 169.17. That was the very last run off the day for any car for the event.

I ended up running 26 times (maybe more if there’s an extra slip or something in the car)!! The car worked so well that I probably only lost 5-7 races and those were to Alpha GTR’s with big HP or motorcycles. I even beat the bikes in a lot of races. The car just has such an advantage on the launch, other vehicles, even with more power and more MPH, can’t recover enough to pull it down.

The only downside was that I had my VBox on all day and it recorded nothing. I have 3 passes that were like burnouts or something. Apparently I have no clue how to use the VBox although I previously was fine with it. I guess I should have brought my laptop and tried to download there so I could see what was up, but live and learn.

FYI, my slowest runs of the day were a 163.9 and a 164.5.

I kept an eye on the weather all day and like I mentioned, it didn’t change much. In early afternoon there was a bit of a tailwind, but by the end of the day it was mostly gone. My weather station had it at around 2-3 mph max. You can see the picture of the airport windsock, it’s got some wind but not much.

And today driving the car around town it is obviously way faster than stock and the exhaust also packed in so it sounds fantastic. I can’t believe what these cars can do. I ran it hard all day and got almost 25 mpg coming home through the desert last night. I love these cars.

The car was so dirty (as you can see in the final pic from last night in my garage) from rain and desert life I've been cleaning it all morning.

P.S. I have no idea why the mph slips are all displaying sideways other than it must be how I oriented the camera and sorry I'm horrible with pics in general.

Yeah it seems to be as fast or close. Conditions were good and I personally never ran NoFlyZone before but I'm sure they're mph is good. And the car just kept getting stronger and stronger all day. I believe perhaps it adjusted throughout the day to the By Design package and kept getting faster.

I will say I had better luck in the right lane than left, but I'm not sure that's anything but exactly that; luck.

What were other fast cars running as reference ? Too bad you didn't record the data from the vbox that would have been helpful .

I have no clue what anyone else was running. I was there alone and kept running so I didn't see much else. I'm curious as well.

Yeah the Vbox issue is really irritating. It was on all day for every run.

Do you have the vbox sport ? All you have to do is make sure the light is on above the flash drive icon and if it's not just push it and your good to go . Assuming you have a good satellite signal .

Nope, I have a different one, I don't recall the name right off. But I was talking with Sam and he also suggested the Sport, so maybe that's the way.

Welcome to the 991.2 TTS club - incredible results. What did you run with your stage 3 in the half mile and how does it compare? Do you still have your .1 Stage 3?

I only ran the .1 once and that was at Coalinga ShiftS3ctor. The car went 163.7 that day, but it's not an entirely fair comparison because the conditions were a lot worse at ShiftS3ctor and I wasn't too familiar with the proper way to drive to get a good mph at a 1/2 mile event. I'm sure the car would have easily gone faster with a better driver or even if I ran it again in the exact same conditions.

That said, the .2 is way fast.

I do still have the .1; it's going to be more focused for track. Sam and I are plotting on what to do and how far to take it.

Ok, full disclosure everyone (especially after the E-gear thing ). We were wondering how the car was so fast so Sam contacted the organizer and we made a realization.

I missed the drivers meeting at the event and did not realize that backing up to the end of the tarmac actually adds some distance to the 1/2 mile. I backed up because I thought that was the beginning of the half mile (this was how I understood it at ShiftS3ctor and I incorrectly assumed the same). This is 100% my error. The organizer believes the difference would be good for probably 2-4 mph with a 600 hp car.

Sooooo, there you have it. Take all my times above with a grain of salt, I f'd it up. But even taking 4 mph off of the 170, the .2 is still very, very strong with no tune.

Sorry about that everyone.

Uri congrats on the purchase and 26 runs that's insane. Tony at noflyzone puts on a great event. All of them are longer than 1/2 mile I'm not sure why he does that at his events you really need the Vbox. My last no fly zone i was up about 6-7mph over a true 1/2 mile. Car should really be a beast with a tune.

Thanks Mark and yeah, the event was a blast for sure! Next time I'll know the routine. And I'm going to get the Vbox sport so I know what's going on real time!

I didn't think the car with no tune and stock turbos bows and no meth or nitrous was capable of a 170 mph standing half mile as you would probably needing more like 800 crank horse power to get there. Didn't want to come quite out and say that as things in the past here tend to get hot and heavy here if you criticize or question results that don't seem credible are supported by the car's power level.

Still 166 mph with your mods without a tune is a great result and to my recollection equals the highest half mile traps of .1 cars with your set up with a tune. Can't wait to see what the result will be with the tune.
