Build Updates?

Never having ordered a custom Porsche, at what milestones in the build process are updates available? When we custom ordered our Mini we were notified when the car went to paint, engine completed, car on vessel etc. Ive bought 3 new cars from my dealer, despite this my salesman seems to need prompting constantly. Its almost as if im a bother when I contact him. The level of service when buying a $100k+ car seems lacking. Its almost like if you don't buy the car someone else will. I regress. What can one expect as far as updates in the build process? TIA!

sorry to hear that. i don't think it's a lot of trouble for them--they just log in and get the staus of your order number. my salesperson let me know the estimated build date, emailed me when it was painted and sent me the vin which was issued yesterday.
even though the car should be here by the end of january and can't be sold until 2/4--it's still fun to be updated as your baby is born.

My sales staff (I say staff because I worked with the GM and a sales guy in tandem) were quite helpful when i ordered my 997.2 and seemed as excited as I was. Now that I have returned and have ordered a 991 they seem similarly excited. They were giddy when my 997.2 arrived. Made me feel good. I hope you don't assume that this is the M.O with the Porsche buying experience for everyone - i.e. don't let it sour you.

..and if I were you and felt any static, I'd drop some directives. Say "I will be needing updates along the way - at each interval of mfg...here is my phone and email - where is my car in the process as we speak??" and "update me every friday before you go home - use my email if it's more convenient."

Just like your mini there are stages like pre-build, paint, completion, rail (sorry I can't recall the names of each step). From what I remember the car is completely built in under 2 weeks. They can get you the VIN once it's underway.

Keep us posted.

Thanks Eric. So far all I know is the cars completion date is Jan 5th! Assuming the Build takes 2 weeks, I should be hearing something soon....I HOPE. Will post any updates I do or don't receive here. Thanks again.

Just heard back from mine, it is complete and in 'post production inspection'. Previous estimated completion date was Jan 10, so they are ahead of schedule on this one.

Not sure how long to get to Bay Area, but I presume it will be mid Feb or so.

Getting exciting!

Congratulations! Ive received ZERO updates, was told "completion date Jan 5th," no news. I took Eric's advice and specifically spoke with my salesman about being informed of any and all updates along the process! Can you hear the crickets chirp?

Got VIN # today! Im assuming that means the build is completed Now it all seems real again, getting excited all over again. Still bummed I didn't order the "smokers package." Not sure where to plug in the radar. Not sure i want to hardwire as I like having access to the mute button to the 9500ix power cord.

Good to hear, Spike.

So w/out smoker's package (which I also did not consider), what power options are up in the front of the car? Surely there must be a place to plug/charge a phone, etc?

I've been paying close attention to all the 991 pictures I've seen on the web trying to see if a charging port comes into view, without any success. My GTS had a place on the passenger side foot well. Just saw a 991 pic of that area and couldn't see a charging port. I'm guessing a port will be in the glove box but that won't help when it comes to a radar. I would have never dreamed to order the smokers package. Hard wire may be the only solution. Ultimately nota big deal.

The information on standard features of the 991 (see Porsche website) says that there are three outlets, one of which is in the passenger footwell, just as in the 997.

First order of business - SpikeP - why are you awake at 3am?

Next you got your VIN - that's cool - when they gave you this did they not tell you anything else? I just found out my car is in paint as of yesterday with a completion date of Jan 23rd. Getting excited a bit. Its a real thing now. Not a P.O

Let's stay sync'ed up. We should theoretically have our cars 3 weeks apart. I'd say 2 but you live closer to the port of entry.
