Has anyone been able to compare the bose to the base system yet ? I didn't opt for the bose and am hoping I made the right choice.

According to my local dealer, the base audio is a blaupunkt and it does not have surround capabilities. Both the Bose and the Burmester do have surround. In my 997, I have a Bose system; I prefer listening to the Bose in surround mode. I also listened to the Burmester in the 991 and it sounded very good (the car was in a parking lot and not moving). I have not listened to the base unit, but question how well it will sound if indeed it does not have surround sound capability.

The usual problem with controlling an ipod with usb instead of the apple connector is that the headend sees the ipod as a usb drive. Yes, you can play music but apple uses a file structure which makes navigating the music near to impossible as opposed to the normal drive/folder/song structure of a usb drive. This is the case in 997 and 5th gen ipod for example.

Thanks much. Sorry for any confusion. On my M3 the "pigtail" was required - see below:

It is technically possible for it to be fully functional with just a USB connection. The real question is how was it actually implemented.

EricP - Are you able to cleanly and easily navigate the music with just a USB connection?

I was surprised too that my PCM was able to interface neatly with just the USB, although the interface on my A udi, while it is a special cable, still just connects to the 30-pin port (not the headphone jack), and has done so for years.

On my 991, music navigation is good. Navigation by artist/album/track/playlist all work, however track order is sometimes incorrect within an album. I hope I can find something that I am doing wrong there because it is annoying.

I just went to my dealer and heard the base system ... keep in mind reading this I drove there in my 08 911 with the Bose system.

All I can say is WOW I was really amazed on how good it sounded ... the bass boomed up high (not sure how else to explain it) and it cranked up very loud and clear and it blew away the Bose system in my car.

I actually checked the window sticker 3 times to make sure it didn't have the Bose in it ...

For me it is more than enough and I am happy with my choice, for those going with the Bose or the Burmester ... wow that must be one heck of a system !!!!

Theoretically, BOSE system cannot give you good sound quality. It's missing a lot of high AND low frequencies... If you opt for BOSE, you are paying $ to downgrade your audio.

See following:

http://www.soundadviceblog.com/newsp...-provide-them/

http://www.intellexual.net/bose.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bose_Corporation (go to "Opinions about Bose")

And I mentioned earlier that BOSE had its own characteristic sound, and it's not really a compliment. Ideally, audio, video or any reproduction should be transparent. Think of a copy machine for an example... if you can tell that someone used Xerox to make a photo copy you are holding, in addition to identifying it IS a photo copy, then Xerox did a terrible, terrible job... the ideal photo copy should be exactly the same as the original. Same goes to audio, but things are bit more complicated in this area as this is about something you don't see...

As someone who is as into his sound systems as his cars (actually more) Bose is absolute junk. They spend 99% of their money on advertising, and 1% on R and D.

I have the Bose system in my 2006 Cayman S. It's not very good. I ordered a Burmester for my 991 S. I heard it playing FM HD and it was excellent.

I totally agree with this statement. Bose is junk plain and simple. It may sound good if you are comparing it with another Bose, but if you compare it with some high quality speakers, it's night and day. I can't believe how much they charge for the Bose upgrade. Can anyone say how good the base speaker system is?

Yes 100%. And let me add that the sound quality of the BOSE with an MP3 player and decent encoded song files the sound system comes alive a little bit. I was listening to Kraftwerk really f-ing loud today and really living the pure sterile German experience

It sounded great. FM sounds not so much. I understand that FM is an analog signal but FM sounds great in my BMW - no so much in the Porsche.

Also in my experience the "Surround" options for iPod/CD/FM, etc thins the sound out and removes the punch. I keep surround off for a more dynamic range.

So basically I give BOSE a B/B-. Not terrible with MP3 - pretty good actually. FM terrible. XM Sat is awful as usual but that's because SiriusXM pushes a digital data stream of like 56k or less. You can't polish a turd :/

If one were to upgrade the system wouldn't it make sense to go with the base system? Logic would dictate that there are less signal processors, funky connections, amps, etc that the installer would have to interface with.

I would think you could add a nice line level converter and have your installer upgrade the speakers/amps.

Bose :/

BOSE..No Highs, No Lows.
I love audio, and have changed all of it out. Bose gets D- Burmiester B+.

Sry, if you spend any money on these two it's just because you wanted an OEm installed system. If you have a coupe, and want a great system, get it done locally or go to a larger city to get what you want.

If you have ordered a cab... don't bother with any of it. The acoustics are crappy with the top down, which is where it belongs
