Evo Comparo Reviews of 991 and 991S
I agree with many of the previous comments that 997's are very fast and likely more car than most buyers (including me) can handle or need. Although I haven't been to the track yet with the 991, in my limited experience with the new car, the 991 seems to be more stable and planted. To an amateur enthusiast, I think this is a good thing because it will give the driver more confidence. From my experience with other Pcars and sports cars, more confidence leads to smoother driving and faster lap times.
Why does planted = boring? That's not logical.
The Cayman R is also very stable and planted, thus relatively easy to drive fast with confidence. But the downside is that it can bit a bit 'boring' when not driven (very) fast. And since we're not racing, do our lap times really matter, except as an indication of improving driving skill?
Your statement may be true, but personally I don't see the 997 or 991 as boring. I thought that tracking my old Boxster was a little boring, but never any 911 that I tracked (although I have not tracked the 991 yet). The main reasons why I am making the switch is that I want to try the PDK (and think it is a big improvement over the last ones I drove) and I really like the new interior layout.

Also - did you get PDCC?
I thought that the PDCC was very stable when put to the test. It reminded me of a go kart type of stability. I did get PDCC.
To say planted equals boring is to oversimplify. What I'm saying is that the 997 bobs and tilts enough to convey useful and enjoyable info to the driver (without being scary or compromising performance significantly), whereas a more planted car has less of that. I prefer the more dynamic feel, but planted has its own pleasure too.
I'm pretty tired and read this quickly but I don't think he's contradicting himself. He's saying that driver skill is the part of the equation missing in most "Internet" analysis of this new car. In other words a great driver in a 997 is still going to pass a good one in a 991.
He then said that the CAR has moved the performance bar up compared to the 997. Did they do it with a few more nanny controls? Yes. The purists are going to take issue with that. The younger drivers for whom this may be their first Porsche probably won't.

This statement only begs the question why you bought a Porsche. See thats what the fighter pilots that flew pilots aircraft would never say. There is FUN and there is getting the job done. You want a jet/fighter/car that is fun to drive. If you are going to war or a race, you want to get the job done.
My favorite airplane is a piper super cub. Not a Gulfstream V, or even a Mooney, Cessna Caravan, Cirrus, or DA-40. Why because its just a pure joy to fly.
What porsche did with the recent cars(997 987) was get fun and job done as close as they could. Some models more get the job done, more fun.
Some models are made to be rocket ships and reduce driver bang ups in the corners. TT speaks to that.
But you bought you car based of no experience and what someone told you. That is fine but its not really working to sit here and tell us a slower car feels better to you than supercars. It might feel better because you own it, but so did pintos.
Im glad you like the 991, but to gush and gush.... just to point out you have the latest and greatest?
You say its better in the corners? in what way? You just dont point the car and go, there is more too it. Then someone is wise for trading the TT for a 991 yet the 991 is like a rocket..
Yeah I know its you car it has to be the best
For the first time tonight I felt dynamic engine mounts working in a 991. Had it in sport plus and got going too quick around a 45mph "Clover" circular on ramp in pitch dark- got off the gas just a touch (so I didn't die) and didn't feel the engine want to roll out of my car like a bushel of apples in the back of a pickup truck. So cool. I was preparing for a heaving rollout feeling that I remember from my previous car. This car is so rigid and flat it's almost harshly flat (is harshly a word?)

hilar ious

Did you feel the heavier crank too???

:rol leyes:

I think you should be on the GT cup team or the Alms teams to compare the 997 to a bushel of apples falling off a truck...
That or yuo dont knowhow to #$@$@#$ing drive
I used to be in a skill level like that in my last career and yeah you can tell little things. Its great listening to the young pups talk about stuff they read in the manual and cant make the car do....but can because the manual says so
We can discuss this day and night, but at the end of the day the cayman r is an AMAZING car that handles on its rails. Little side note...if porsche dropped the rs 4.0 engine into the cayman, that car would be my new favorite porsche. It will never happen, but a guy can dream right?
It seems to me that all the new Porsches have lost their soul.
I still have a '79 911SC (with '87 Carrera engine) from previous Porsches I have owned. I had an '09 Cayman for two years, but it just felt too sterile. Even though it was probably one of the best cars I have ever owned, I sold it. It just didn't have the soul or character of the older 911's. My wife, who is not a car buff, made similar remarks.
I don't think this applies just to Porsches, however. It see it in other cars as well.
Cheers
