It is part of side-impact crash gear. Its exact function for that is not clear, but it was mentioned and confirmed by Porsche representatives during last week's Cayman launch.

As everyone said.. it's an impact / safety item.

The Ford GT has a very similar setup on it's door, though the receptacle on the door sill is far more visible than it is on the 991.

This is for Boxster, but I am thinking it is the same umbrella for 991.

I heard that they changed the umbrella from 997 to 991. I got one from the zuff dealer, and its not leather like that one above on the yellow cayman. Also its on the passenger side sill not the drivers. Im glad im flexible
