Break-in RPM
Break-in RPM
Hi I am still doing break-in on my 991S. I have a question regarding RPM?
My previous car is CS gen2 DFI engine and Porsche says that the RPM should not exceed 4,200 rpm during break-in period (first 2,000 miles). It is painful but I tend to follow to keep my car in shape.
I read 991 user manual but could not find any where about reccomneded RPM during break-in, so I just wonder that would it be the same as CS or not?
Or I can go above 4,200 rpm? Thank you for any feedback on this.

Thank you for all comments , one more question. Porsche says that break-in period is 3,000 miles which seems quite high to me.
My previous CS is 2,000 miles but I did only 2,000 km = 1,250 miles then change engine oil + filter. The car ran fantastic.
What do you normally keep break-in's mile?
PS. My 991S is 350 miles now... Still a long way to go

I recently re-broke in my motor and Porsche tech mention to keep it under 4200rpm, and never lug the motor around in a high gear and low rpms.. so make shifts often early to keep the rpms constantly moving between idle and 4200; then viola' you have a motor ready to get beat on for 24 + straight hours
I won't argue with the factory recommendation because I just don't know. I do know that 2000 miles can take a very long time for a car in the northern latitudes if it's is not a DD!
FWIW, I've done 1000 mile break ins with my last three 911's without any problems.

The motor has to see redline early and often if you want to do it right.

Hello and congratulations. I asked a similar question in a thread entitled
"car-control-during-break in" and there were some different, and very involved answers. Take a look at those. I was asking if it was OK to do a car control clinic soon after getting the car (which I hope will happen next week). Most agreed on what you have already been told about keeping the revs under 4200 and to vary speed and load. Most seemed to feel that it was the first 500 miles that were the most critical. Some felt that after that you should drive it hard. Some felt you can take the revs higher (say 6000) but generally keep things under tight control for the first 1000 miles. I got the impression that some significant number did not think it much mattered after that.
I took from this that I could do the car control clinic from my local PCA, likely to be harder on the breaks than the engine, and I will make sure I have at least 500-600 miles on it before that. I am going to be a little less gentile after that, but don't expect to see me press the sports/sports plus buttons until I am close to 1500 miles.
All of the best.
