ouch sorry to hear. what a bad timing.
Yeah sorry to hear about this Chuck!
Hope you get that new toy back soon... fyi 911 have clips on the coolant hoses (at connections) are notoriously bad!
Many owners (including myself) have had issues with hoses coming off because of these clips... and what a mess it makes, might as well have sprung a "leak".
Maybe something to look into as sometimes they will only leak when the pressure builds up (that is until they come off completely...)
One would think these types of issues have been fixed on the 991 but ya never know...
Good luck!

I must have missed something as I didn't realize many people have had trouble with a hose clip and I didn't even realize it happened to you. I would love to hear more detail about exactly which hose, etc.
I'll check that when I do my hospital visit this afternoon.
Thanks again everyone for your sympathy and support.

The good news is that it happened right as I was getting back into the garage and not on a long trip in these 100 degree temperatures with my wife. We haven't had an infant mortality problem in years and we get a new car every couple of years (since we have two). It will be interesting to see if I hear from Porsche.

Just got notified that it is a broken coolant bleeder valve. Inventory status says it's available but they say the inventory status is not reliable. They will know tomorrow if it has to come from Germany. I'll bet that would mean late next week. I'm going to be tired of this VW Passat well before then- in fact, it drives like a tank.

Good luck and hope you get your ride back quick!

Totally with you on this. If they have the slightest concern about this, you better find another dealer. And giving you a Passat is almost insulting. I am sure they have other cars -not necessarily their usual loaners- with dealer plates they could give you for July 4th!
Good luck and hope you get your ride back quick!

We probably posted at the same time, but the update is above. They don't have any Porsche loaner's in their inventory.

Turns out it is something in the cooling system, but they don't have any idea what it is yet. Both of us were surprised at the color of the coolant-pink. They were nice, but their head mechanic says the only work they have done on a 991 is one oil change. I'm a little concerned! They will probably call the factory to let them know what happened and get advice. We looked at the coolant level and the tank only showed slightly down so I think the probability of secondary damage from high temps is low. The coolant temp was 200 and there wasn't residue all over the back side of the bumper so it may have just happened when I turned the car off. I guess it's possible that it was just overfilled or someone left the cap partially tight and it vibrated loose.
They gave me a new VW Passat to drive as they didn't have a Porsche. It's not a real good drive. If they can figure out how to get the back bumper off, I should know what happened by Thursday.
Thanks for everyone's supportive comments.

Edit:
Just saw your post they found the problem. That's good cause when I had that incident, I always wondered if it would happen again.
Bad news is you may be driving the VW longer than you wanted.

Interestingly, I bought an Infiniti G35 when they first came out and had a pinhole leak in one of the hoses. I'm not complaining though, it could been a transmission failure like one of us had- although if they don't have the part locally, it might take longer to get it fixed than it took to fix his transmission. And I could have been on the road on vacation in the 100 degree heat.

In the early 90's I drove off the lot with a new Nissan in 103 degree Texas heat,....two stop lights from the dealer a hose blew off the compressor (cross-threaded at the factory) and spewed every ounce of freon underneath the car into a huge white clowd. A/C went instantly hot and the cars next to me couldn't get away fast enough. Now that was embarrassing.
Things do happen to all levels of cars,....$15k Kia's and $400k Ferraris....

Update
Just stopped by to see the car with the back bumper off, ready for the part and found out that they don't think they will have to take it off to replace the relief valve, rather they believe they have plenty of room if they take off the wing. If that's correct, that's some great news. The bad news is the valve has not arrived. It was suppose to be in Atlanta, but they are thinking there really wasn't one there (it was just a place-holder on their inventory). We'll know later today.

Too bad on the VW loaner though... the "plus" side is that you'll appreciate your 991 that much more when ya get it back.

Re clips; they are used to connect the coolant hoses to the radiators etc.
When installed properly there's no issues... but for some reason factory and dealer techs seem to get it wrong every so often.

Not sure what's worse, a tech screwing up on a clip which comes loose in a steaming cloud of spewing coolant... or a when he doesn't tighten the battery connector and that comes loose while all cells light-up like a X-mass tree and the 911 dies...
Guess either is better than having a Ferrari catch on fire.
Chuck good to hear things are getting fixed.
