Left Stranded

I regret to report that my new 991 sprung a large power steering leak with 750 miles on it and is in the process of being towed to the dealer. There go my 4th of July plans. Not good!

Chuck, unless I'm missing something, the elec p/s system on the 991 doesn't use hydraulic, or any other kind of fluid. If that's true, what fluid was leaking? In any case, any serious leak is bad news so I hope the dealer resolves it quickly.

You are absolutely right, it was coolant.

Chuck,
Sorry to hear about the car and your plans for the 4th. Should get a Panamera to use, but realistically it's not the same for a holiday drive. Sucks man. Keep us up to date on the root cause and repair.

Turns out it is something in the cooling system, but they don't have any idea what it is yet. Both of us were surprised at the color of the coolant-pink. They were nice, but their head mechanic says the only work they have done on a 991 is one oil change. I'm a little concerned! They will probably call the factory to let them know what happened and get advice. We looked at the coolant level and the tank only showed slightly down so I think the probability of secondary damage from high temps is low. The coolant temp was 200 and there wasn't residue all over the back side of the bumper so it may have just happened when I turned the car off. I guess it's possible that it was just overfilled or someone left the cap partially tight and it vibrated loose.

They gave me a new VW Passat to drive as they didn't have a Porsche. It's not a real good drive. If they can figure out how to get the back bumper off, I should know what happened by Thursday.

Thanks for everyone's supportive comments.

He did say they had been to training and he did take the cooling fans out to see if we could see anything but they had never taken the bumper off. If he needs to see the video, I'm in real trouble!

It is discouraging to be left stranded by your brand new luxury sports car. I am sure they'll fix it and this will become a distant memory, but stuff like this should not be happening in a new porsche.

Hey Chuck-I guess it could be worse, hang in there. You have been such a strong advocate for the 991 so I hope a resolution to the problem will come quickly. Happy 4th of July and let us know what happens.

Yeah sorry to hear about this Chuck!
Hope you get that new toy back soon... fyi 911 have clips on the coolant hoses (at connections) are notoriously bad!

Many owners (including myself) have had issues with hoses coming off because of these clips... and what a mess it makes, might as well have sprung a "leak".

Maybe something to look into as sometimes they will only leak when the pressure builds up (that is until they come off completely...)
One would think these types of issues have been fixed on the 991 but ya never know...

Good luck!
