Do PSE cars still use sound symposer?

I got my PSE retrofitted yesterday. Sounds great. I'm very pleased with the result. However, there is no more sound symposer in my car now.

If I press sport and/or sport plus but deactivate sport exhaust, I should have the throaty nasal symposer engine noise when I put my foot in it (just like before I had PSE) - right? Instead there is no sound difference at all accelerating with sport or sport plus on vs. off (without the PSE on).

I think the tech disconnected the symposer? (Vacuum lines?)

Can someone with factory PSE confirm whether their symposer still works?

Thanks.

Yes, symposer works with PSE switched on or off, as long as Sport or Sport Plus is lit.

No doubt about it ... the symposer should be working when in sport and sport plus mode ...

PSE is not going to change that ...

Thanks for the replies

I have an appt. next Tuesday. Tech says symposer was untouched during pse install, so perhaps it's an electrical/PIWIS issue?

The PSE is great.

Me 2

I also had the PSE retrofitted this week, with PSE activated, awesome sound but definitely more muted in the cabin than before, sounds exactly like you said, the symposer is disconnected ?

Let me know what you find?

Exactly

I talked with the tech. He said nothing was touched around the symposer. No wiring or vacuum lines. Makes me think its a PIWIS/electrical issue.

I'm urging my service advisor to contact Porsche directly for advice. Don't forget this is a brand new retrofit kit. Could be a small bug to work out...?

I'll keep you posted.

Hope you get the issues worked out. Mind sharing you cost for the PSE retrofit kit and install? Did you install with functioning on/off switch or just always on? Thanks

Pse

Mine was 2.5K equipment and 600 for install.

Yes switch in cabin, it works same as the installed version.
Hit the sport button and as the non-pse version (S) it opens the exhaust valves and lights up the switch.

In sport plus it does the same. The difference in having the PSE switch in the cabin is that you can activate the valves in the exhausts without utilizing the sport or sport plus button.

However I found out that the PSE activated in std mode is pretty subdued so I drive in sport mode all the time.

PSE w/out switch

I had a lot of people suggest that I not do the full install w/switch on my 997.2. I did the full install and drove with the button on 95% of the time.

I did the full install on the new car as well, and its a different story...I use PSE maybe 50% of the time. Reasons: 1) PSE for 991 is louder than 997,2; 2) 991 is much quieter on the highway than 997.2 was - so more reason to hush the exhaust when just cruising; and 3) the new PSE sounds mean, whereas the prior PSE just enhanced the existing Porsche flat 6 sound, so it really is an option as opposed to a volume setting.

Now if I can just get my engine note back from the symposer....

Feel lucky that the sound symposer doesn't work. The drone is annoying and it sounds fake. I love the outside sound of the PSE but not the inside sound. I stuffed and duct taped the inside port and it's more tolerable now.

PSE cost

Labor was about the same, but I have a 3.4 carrera, and the PSE kit is $500 more than for the 3.8? (Maybe b/c the 3.8 uses the existing exhaust tips?)

Talk to your service advisor. Depending on your dealer, they could get carried away with the labor ($1000+)

Good luck,

Why not simply avoid sport/sport plus (unless you have a PDK car)? That will eliminate the symposer.

I love the sound, but agree its not desirable on the highway or just cruising.

Didn't mean to sound so negative on the PSE. I love the sport exhaust sound, especially the pops and burbles with downshifting. The drone of the symposer just gets old after a while. I have the pdk and it's so much more responsive in sport mode that it's the only way I drive it. Since I plugged up the symposer under the back window, it sounds better and more tolerable for longer highway drives. I usually have it in sport mode with the pse off since the normal exhaust sound is so sweet and almost perfect as it is.
