Rnl, you've got a very smart girl there!! My daughter is only 5 but she already asks when we are going to get the convertible Porsche. She LOVED all the test drives. Not sure she will be asking for it when I die just yet but it won't be too far from now. That being said I had my 997 for about 3.5 years and have missed it every day since I sold it. So I'm hoping to be able to keep this one a bit longer. I sold it to get a family car when she was born., 5 series. For the 991 I told the wife we could have a second child only if I got another Porsche. So my car will be delivered in Jan and my son will be 6 months one in Jan. guess it all worked out

Lol. Is the Huayra even legal in the US??? Amazing car. Pagani has been one of my favorites for a long time. Unless to talk to a real car guy most folks seem to have never heard of them.
Sounds like your 2 have made great choices for their schools and careers. My daughter seems like a lawyer, with every conversation being a debate with lots of justification on her side for why she is correct! Maybe that's where she will end up! Then she can buy good old dad a nice Pagani as a retirement present!

I usually spec mine to keep for six years and then sell after two (to the amused grimace of my wife).
Where cars are concerned, I'm not a good investor. But neither am I sitting, waiting for life to drop in my lap.

I told my wife 4yrs, it was a stipulation to getting the 991S. I had already put her through the following in the last 4 cars: CLK55-4yrs (lease)

I was into the 14th year with my BMW e46 coupe. Bought a 2000 back in the summer of '99. Great car. And I had recently put on new shocks, tires, replaced the cooling system, etc and planned to keep it until it hit 20.
Then I saw, and test drove, the 991. After 30 years of wishing and wanting a 911, I couldn't wait any longer. And I realized that I could pour more money into the BMW for little return, or buy the 991 now and keep it for 20 years and spend the money on keeping it in top shape.
But who knows...20 years from now they might not even let gasoline powered cars on the road. Then I'll be like Lee Majors in The Last Chase, and bust the car out for one last glory drive.
Then I saw, and test drove, the 991. After 30 years of wishing and wanting a 911, I couldn't wait any longer. And I realized that I could pour more money into the BMW for little return, or buy the 991 now and keep it for 20 years and spend the money on keeping it in top shape.

Best thing about this car is that my wife feels that it rides better than the BMW did. The seats are more comfortable, and the tires/wheels/struts/springs feel more composed. It is a sports car that drives like a race car, but it isn't jarring.
The only drawback is that it makes me want to skip work and go driving...
P.S. This 911 is EXACTLY the same external dimensions as my old BMW e46 coupe. Same length, width, and weight. I guess that is how much the 911 has grown over the years...

3) my 40th bday present to myself
4) was bought with a portion of proceeds from a mega "home run" investment exit that my partners and I made

I read an article in one of the Porsche mags earlier this year discussing whether the 991 is a long term keeper.
The author speculated the modern electronic nannies would cause many from keeping it as long previous 911 owners tend to do.
By the end of the article, after discussion with others, the author decided there should be no reason to not keep it long term. The complicated systems may prevent a lot of DIY repairs and maintenance but there are sure to be independant techs around to keep the car going. Its just gonna require money to keep it in classic shape as opposed to blood and sweat in your garage.
I can't remember the other reasons this subject was worth taking up valuable magazine space over but the one reason I do remember is not even worth writing about imo. Its a no brainer. Its logic that cars cost money to keep in tip-top condition. My attitude reading the article was that it was a waste of space.

I'll keep it for a very long time, because:

2) have customized it to the bone with the exact options I could ever dream of
3) have extra cash(cash purchase) ...don't really need it for anything else at this time
4) get it now before kids outgrow the rear seats
5) early 40th present (more than 2 years too early...lol)...
