Cleaning our wheels ... how to avoid them getting dirty from the rotor rust ...

I hope this doesn't get moved to the detailing forum because I find this to be a problem only with my 991 (and my 997 when I had it)

I am trying to figure out how to wash my wheels once .... let me explain what I mean.

Once I wash the wheels if I drive the car right away to avoid the brake rotors from getting that rust coat the wheels end up very dirty from what I am guessing is more brake dust ... not really sure why they are getting so dirty right afterwards but I end up having to take a dry towel and pretty much re wash the entire wheel.

If I allow the wheels to dry or if I use a leaf blower to dry them then I get the rusted rotors which means once I drive the car the wheels are dirty again from the rust and I need to take a damp towel to clean them again.

BTW when I am talking about cleaning, I clean the entire wheel .... the barrels, behind the wheel spokes, etc.

Also any good cleaning tools you can recommend. I use a boars hair brush as well as different size wands (or sticks) to get deep into the barrels.

Instead of re-washing them, just spray them with a spray detailer and wipe them clean with micro fiber towels.

Try using a good wheel wax. This will not eliminate anything, the wheels will still get dirty from brake dust, it will just be easier to clean and the brake dust will not accumulate as much. There is no way to eliminate brake dust unless you get the very expensive ceramic brakes from what I understand. I also agree with TT -- use a spray detailer and microfiber towel.

Just for easier cleaning and not doing wax job on every wash, try "glass coating".
Something like this: http://esotericcarcare.com/22PLE

Two coats of RejeX on the wheels and much less brake dust sticks. The dust that does quickly washes off with a light spray of water.

I'm not sure but glass coating do have several types for different applications such as for body panels, windows, plastic trims, wheels, etc.

af3301: I feel your pain. As I wash the car weekly, (997.2 currently), I am more than familiar with the rust issue. Very aggravating and time consuming to say the least. At one point, I figured the best way to avoid the problem would be to somehow cover the rotors and attempt to keep them dry during washing. Ended up buying some magnetic vinyl sheeting and fashioning pieces that covered each rotor. Actually worked fairly well, but over time they began to tear as well as getting filthy with brake dust. (When ordering my 991 I was very tempted to go with the PCCBs and be done with rotor rust forever).

My brakes stick to the rotors after washing (after it sits overnight) unless I ride the brake pedal for 20-30' before putting it in the garage after washing.

I drive forward, backward, forward, backward. . . in my driveway after I use my leaf blower on the car, before I pull it in the garage to dry. Look like a nut job to my neighbors, but don't care. After this, I wipe off as much rust as possible with a throw away rag. It's a pain, but it eliminates a lot of dried rust on my clean wheels.

Like you, I am very thorough with my wheel cleaning. I clean inside the wheel, behind the spokes, calipers, and the wheel well (which is a pain with SPASM because of the 1/2 inch lower ride height).

We all feel your pain...
I've had good luck with a product from Eagle One called 'Keep Clean' wheel protector.
Makes the next cleanup a lot easier.
I Tried using Meguiar's Brake Dust Barrier and it stained my wheels, so I returned it.
I'm told that Armor All wheel Protector works well but I've yet to try it.

I use the Armor All wheel Protector and have been pleased with the results. Works like a non stick spray, which allows you to remove brake dust with just the hose.

Sorry I should have explained it better ... this is exactly what I do when I said 'rewash' them

I am just getting tired of doing it a second time after the initial wash and was trying to find out if anyone had a solution.

Detroit Shooter is infamous around these parts
Why do you care about the rust on the rotor? 2 stops out of the driveway it is gone?
