I'm waiting patiently for my Factory Collection of my first new P Car in May, and wondering about motoring life ahead....

This is my 60th birthday present, and at this point plan to keep it for say 10 years to do big road trips, not DD. So I could see us doing 60/70k mies in this time.

And this got me thinking about Extended Warranty. I searched threads and surprisingly could not find anything.

So I'd really appreciate any comments, experiences, costs and negotiability, how long you can leave it to sign up, and anything more.

The prospect of a huge bill for PDK or engine, electronics etc after it's out of factory warranty would definitely take the shine off the experience.

A search of some of the other areas of this board (997, Cayenne, or Boxster, for example) will likely turn up a lot of discussion about extended warrantee and the merits and pitfalls.

Unfortunatley for those of us that live in the USA, Porsche does not offer a "normal" factory extended warranty that can be bought at the time of purchase. You can obtain a CPO when/if you buy a used Porsche and some owners have reported luck in working with certain dealers to CPO their own cars before they go out of warranty but those experiences aren't universal. There are a number of very good aftermarket alternatives (Fidelity normally has good ratings) as well.

Keep in mind that extended warranty programs by their very nature are money makers for the providers (otherwise they wouldn't offer them) but when you consider the replacement cost of the electronics, etc. in a $100,000+ new car many of us feel extended warrantees are relatively cheap insurance and peace of mind.

The big things tend to go wrong sooner rather than later. So I doubt your pdk transmission will konk out after working fine for four years.

Extended warranties are generally just profit for those who sell them.

 

Go for it, that way you make sure you'll never be sorry you didn't!

In Canada for roughly $3500 you get a total of 6 years or 160 000KM, I will be purchasing it as I plan to keep the car for 6 years.

 

I'm in Canada also and am hoping to get it as I plan on keeping the car 10 years. Won't put a lot of miles per year, probably 4-5,000 max as I have a daily driver.

this was a big issue for me. i've had several land rovers, which i love, but at the end of the day they are pretty awful once the factory warranty runs out. i had a 3rd party warranty on one of them which was completely useless. they would deny everything like a freaking health insurance company. i made the decision that i would only purchase factory extended warranties from here forth.

when i started looking at a 991, which would be my first porsche, i really tried to figure out how long i'll be keeping it and how many miles i'll be putting on it. i drive about 20k mi/year just for work, and i decided that i wanted to keep this car a long time so i kept my eye out for CPOs since i couldn't get a factory extended warranty through porsche, like i could with other car manufacturers. i also figured this route would be good to get my feet wet in the porsche world.

i ended up finding my 991 with a 3k miles and CPO'd by the dealer. the dealer had done a short term lease for one of their long time customers while his new fully spec'd 991S cab was being built. the list price was very good on the car and the car was essentially new with pretty much everything i wanted on it except PSE, which i've now added. it also gave me essentially a 5 year 9 months or 97k mile warranty from the time of my purchase in december.

for those that don't have to have a brand new car or the wonderful experience of ordering one, i think CPO is a good option. also, porsche does have a good CPO locator on their website.

Great thread. I to plan on owning my 991 for at lest 10 years but with low milage. I agree that any insurance is pricey and low probability of benefit. Porsche has excellent quality record thus I will take my chances and treat my car well.

 

Be sure to find out if it's true Porsche extended warranty (similar/same as CPO) or it's aftermarket. If aftermarket I wouldn't take the chance personally. If Porsche product then I'd probably get.

1: I wonder why Porsche in USA does not offer official extended warranty, when other countries do?
2: @ Da Happa: I did a general search of all forums for extended warranty (before I posted), but found almost no threads on this - which could be that the cars are so reliable we don't have to worry..
3: When do you have to sign up for the aftermarket warranties? Is it anytime before the official warranty expires? or anytime before you take delivery from the showroom?....
4: As a general rule I don't believe in insurance and always have highest deductible available etc, as I believe their object is not to pay you through small print etc.....BUT in my small world, this is an exception - as an electronic/ignition/injection/dashboard type issue could be a huge issue - even if a major component does not break.

They said its through Porsche, not 3rd party, but I need to get all the paper work and read all the details.
Its worth it for $3500 to get the extra two years and 80 000KM.

 

I went to Porche Centre Vancouver yesterday to see about Extended Warranty. There is a "Porsche" extended warranty available either now (approx $3,400) or out at end of warranty (47 months) same price but car has to be inspected at cost in the $3-$400 range. Coverage is out to 120k kms and 2 additional years. Covers about 85% (details to come) of what the original warranty is.

Another option is a third party warranty for low mileage drivers. Adds 3 years but total KM over the 7 years cannot exceed 80k kms. Cost about $3,900.

Salesman is sending me copies of all the details, hopefully in next day or two.

Good question and I'm not sure anyone outside of PCNA knows the answer. Extended warranties are money makers for the manufacturers and Porsche is usually one of, if not the, best at making money on a per car basis.

I love Porsche but that's probably not it. IMS/RMS issues on the 996/997 and 986/987 as well as coolant hose issues with the 955/957 are all well documented concerns that affect a small but noticable population of Porsche vehicles. In some cases, those issues led to large $ repairs.

The rule of thumb is before the factory bumper to bumper expires. Some manufacturers (Honda for example) offer discounted warrantees until a certain mileage/time threshold has been reached.

John, I have a 2009 911 Targa 4S soon to come off factory warranty. Porsche Calgary is telling me I do not qualify for an extended warranty as the car is from the US and I am the second owner. What did you find out about after market?
