The 918 Spyder prototype in Qatar
I know this might be the wrong forum to post this, but i did not find a better section to post plus am a 991 owner
i got an invitation from Porsche centre Doha giving the opportunity to view the coming 918 Spyder. The car as the guy from porsche mentioned is not a finished product, but he mentioned that rims and body work and interior will be almost exactly the same, only head and tail light will be different as you can see in the pictures that they are using the 991 tail light. Surprisingly, they were open to take orders already while the only details are given is that the car will go from 0-62 in less than 3 seconds, and that you are looking at a price around 3.2 million Qatari Riyals which equals 880,000 USD! They also performed a test drive at Losail International Circuit for those who were called "serious/very interested customers" the day before the car was put in the show room. 2 prototypes were shown, Here are some quick iPhone snaps of the event:

There are only going to be 918 of these built. Which makes it too exclusive for my taste or budget. A million dollar car hardly evokes my interest. Even if I had that kind of money I would rather buy 3-4 "normal" exotic super cars for that price. If speed is of interest the 991 turbo will be very close to this. And an electric motor in a hyper performance car? The time for this is not quite ripe yet.
If only it was priced like one!!
I love the look of the 918. I find it to be very 'fluid' in its form. We still haven't seen the final version of it yet. The models that have been released have the exhaust on the sides, but they have now been moved to to top of the car. He headlights don't look right either. They are more indented as opposed to being smooth on the 991. And the side marker lights will get some refinement too as they do not appear to fit well now.
I will have to wait to get a used one if my wife will let me. I think I hear the whip now!!

Its not the look that i hate, it look really good actually, i don't like the concept of having an electrical motor together with the gasoline engine, it might work out to be a good concept in the future, but at the moment it look stupid to me, with an electrical engine giving a range of something like 5 miles only to drive and takes about 2 hours to charge! When i am going to use that ?
But we do know that electric motors have an amazing amount of torque. If you can utilize that torque to get up to speed then allowing the gas motor to take over from there can really give you an edge in a race.
I don't think they expect the electric motor to do more than give them a pat on the back and say 'we have a hybrid sports car!'
I would not be surprised to see more uber hybrids, ie McLaren. This entire technology race is really amazing to watch and see what can be achieved. Too bad it takes so long for the cost to come down.
