Bargain shopping at 100-120K
I started looking at these cars to see where there are value picks .These are my opinions (not facts) just based on a few weeks of browsing .
1) The best 991 price value is on the current 2013 cars . Since 2014 is nearing time is on the side of the buyer before the 13 car becomes a "leftover" . When the 14 cars come out they have an entire year to sell them (no rush) .
Also note that platinum is being replaced with rhodium . The color will become a "dated" color in time (much like seal gray or cobalt blue with 997 cars) .
2) I notice a few dealerships have an IDENTICAL car !! I see this with a few 991 cars and even some Cayman S launch cars . For example there is a platinum /manua/ PASM/sport exhaust 120K (approx) identical car at two dealerships within 50 miles of each other .
Identical cars .. mean buyer negotiation strength.
Especially launch cars BTW !!!Where every dealership gets the same car !!!
3) By far the best price value is on used Turbo and 997 GtS cars . I found a 2010 CPO Turbo listed at 105K and a Turbo S asking 129K . Even though the PDK is superior in the 991 I feel that the Turbo PDK is a completely different species . To think that a low mile Turbo can be bought for the price of a base 991 (new) makes the Turbo the car to get !!! There will be no complaints about "underpowered " Turbo cars. Its a monster !!!
4) The price level below 100K gets even more interesting . A new Cayman S faces off against late model 997S cars . At 75K the 997.1 Turbo enters the fray (note .. a 997.1 Turbo with 20K in mods can be a 95K total beast but for those who look to remain stock the 2010-2011 Turbo/TurboS is a direct price rival of the current 991.
Lots of choices !!
My verdict.. If I didn't already have a Turbo I would have a very tough time debating between a 991S Vs a low mile CPO Turbo . I'd probably go for the HP and the fact that the 170+K Turbo depreciated significantly enough to place it in 991S price range.

After looking around lately some dealers are sitting on a lot of 991's. Maybe in a couple of months Porsche may put some trunk money on the remaining 13's and there may be some good deals around.
Still think the 991 is an overall big improvement over the 997. Personally I would not go back. IMHO the 991 is a superior car in every way.
I thought this was going to be a thread lamenting those who bargain shop in this price range! Glad it is not. There sure are tons of options.
I had a by chance encounter with a 997.2 turbo vert on the thruway for about 30 miles yesterday ( I was on a small road trip in upstate ny), and we had some fun taking turns leading and getting ahead for one another to open it up and catch up. Needless to say he caught up very, very quickly.

You and I both know that patience is important when buying one of these cars. Remember the deals we both got on our 09's?

. Without a doubt I sold my 997S the same day I test drove a 991S . Comparing apples to apples the 991 wins .. UNTIL .. price enters the fray and one looks at the overall market .
It's hard to digest a 100K 991 Base car when the Hp and torque of the used CPO Turbo is so tremendous . It's hard to digest a used turbo S (original MSRP in the 170's) asking priced at 130K which delivers supercar acceleration . That HP is a big deal .. to some.
I suppose the hardest part of the current 991 is the pricing of the base and "S" cars . Even the 991 Gt3 and Turbo s are high but many desireable options are standard wheras the 991 base and S cars vary tremendously with options .
Also --regarding 2012 -- I feel that both the last 997 as well as the first 991 cars both took a huge financial hit because of the mid year launch.
The 997 had all the benefits of years of ironing out quirks in production only to be cut short by the 991 launch. The 991 was so brief that 2013 arrived only to depreciate the 12 car (and the recalls didn't help either) .
You are right .. the deals of 2009 are long gone. Remember how no one was buying cars back then ? Remember how every penny counted ?
Why not apply that same thought process in todays market and consider that price makes a huge enough impact ? It's at least worth thinking through the choices .

The problem is that many of the cars on lots lack one option or more . I can't be the only one who sees an ideal car but its missing X , y , or Z option(S). In fact I notice a lot of guys here order the car wheras in the past the lots were plentiful and even if one dealership didn't have the car there were 10 others who did.
In short . it's harder to find both the right car at the right price so i think what occurs is that most just dig in their toes and order the car . Then they face the music with price .
I think what's odd is that it used to be harder to find a used Porsche with modest but desireable ("must have") options but nowadays with all the option configurations it seems harder to find a new one .
Ahhh, 2009...will we ever see those days again? Imagine those economic conditions with 140k 991C4S's Cab's on the lot.. I agree with Larry as I went to buy 2011Turbo cash in hand and got blind sided by a 991 C4S Cab, I fell hard and fast and can not decide. It was missing a few key options so I walked out and now I am considering ordering a 2014C4s. I don't understand who orders the options on these cars for the dealers. When you spend this kind of money the must haves have to be on the car. For me PSE is now a must as I am not a MOD guy. I don't think HP (Turbo) ever goes out of style but the 991 fits me better(6'5" 260) and I am in love, what to do?

I think the comparison is flawed because the 997.2 and 991 are significantly different.
I drove a 997.2 turbo and although it was shockingly fast it was a significantly different chassis than the 991. My intention was to buy a 997.2 S manual or Turbo and I walked away with a 991S PDK. If I had not driven the 991 I would have walked away happy once I drove it the 997 would have been a compromise.

I agree on the 991 refinements but at 127K for a nicely spec 991S PDK and 70K for a low mile 997 S manual that's almost a 60K price difference . That's how crazy the 991 prices are and if no one thinks they will fall hard with depreciation then take a look at all the used Porsches even at 70 K unsold .
A new Turbo just last year was 155K anda turbo S was 175. To ask 130 for it now is not just a bargain its a screaming bargain !!
No matter how one views the merrit of quiality the price changes that dynamic . Just as the 991 has some refinements I see a Turbo in noth Florida asking 105K and a base 991 asking the same and the Hp difference is so huge and how much more is that turbo going to depreciate . In 3 years maybe 20 K ? A 2012 base 991 car has already depreciated more than that . With its mid year launch and 2014 around the corner the 991 base car and all the recalls places the owner in a very different position one year later that what I project on the guy who buys a used Turbo in one year from now at these current prices.

I agree !!!! I look at car after car on lots and fir the life of me i can not understand why a PDK system is lacking sport chrono . Do you know that on a Gt3 spec sheet the PDK is FREE but the sport Chrono is 4K as an option !!!
I also see cars with comfort options mixed with sport options or visa versa . Its almost like when they put sport bucket seats in a C4S 997 launch car . The guy who is buying a C4S isnt looking for race seats !! Or when they launch a car missing key options !!
That's another point . at 120K a missing option is much different than when these cars were less . Theres no room for error if one buys the wrong car at thse prices because the depreciation downside risk is higher than in ther past when the cars cost less and had less option choices.

Where are you getting your facts from matey?
GT3... sports Chrono 4k ?!!! Hmmmm I guess you know something even Porsche doesn't know about the GT3!!!! Btw, pdk on the 991 gt3 is free because its the only gearbox they provide for it!!!
I'm also doubting your sport bucket seat info. I stand to be corrected on that.
Hey ho, another long winded thread to toss into the bin<toss>....

I tried to ignore so much of your post but some things are just plain ridiculous.
