Fifth Gear

Tonight at 10 on Velocity Channel is a new Fifth Gear which is supposed to be a showdown between a BMW M6 and a Porsche 911.
"Tiff is joined by German motoring legend and ‘Queen of the Nurburgring’ Sabine Schmitz for a head to head battle between our two favourite sports cars of the last year the BMW M6 and Porsche 911."

Until recent years I think the 911 was thought of as being all about performance and not much of a luxury car, so chances are that M6 and SL buyers were less likely to cross-shop the 911. All that has changed in recent years and now the 991's price- & class-competitors are the M6, the SL, the R8, the GranTurismo and GranCabrio, Jaguar XKR, and the Nissan GT-R. Also in the mix would be the Viper and the Corvette, though to a lesser degree. I think the new Jaguar F-Type is more in the class of the Boxster, SLK, and BMW Z4 and thus not a direct competitor to the 991.

I'd watch her drive anything, especially on the 'Ring! She's amazing! But, Tiff is a retired professional driver so he's no slouch, either.

I just don't see the M6 and the 911 in the same class. That Bimmer is a much bigger car. There may be some cross over when it comes to buyers, but one is a sports car, the other is more of a tourer.
The testing really wasn't fair either, not very real world. But then again, as long as the Porsche won, I'm happy.

In the $100K - $150K range there is only one true sports car, the 991. All the rest are sporty grand tourers, much heavier and packing lots of torque and HP to compensate for all the weight. But, there are plenty of people with $100K - $150K to spend on a 2-seater or 2+2 coupe or convertible, thus the 991 fits within those parameters and is therefore cross-shopped with the rest.

Like I said before, there's an *** for every saddle and plenty of saddles to choose from. To each, his (or her) own.

I think this blogger sums it up well. I especially like his line, "But the $50k Corvette isn’t cross-shopped with the 911, which costs $90k, or $2.4 million with options."

Here's the article:

DOES THE PORSCHE 911 HAVE ANY COMPETITORS?
