16 months and 10,000miles

It was 16 months ago today that I got behind the wheel, and fittingly, I just crossed 10,000 miles. For me, that is a lot of driving in that period of time. My Mustang is now 7 years old (and unfortunately likely to be sold soon - lack of use and too harsh for my 50+ year old back on NJ's ever pockmarked streets), and has less than 17,000 total miles.

I would have never considered a $100,000+ daily driver, but, in all but the worst weather, that is what it has become. The reasoning you have all expressed in so many ways in so many posts, it is fun and practical - unless you need to haul a lot of people or stuff, it is just such a blast, I can't just use it on the weekends.

I am just finally getting over my shock at seeing the tach over 5,000 rpms and hearing that great scream from behind enough to really floor it. The car still manages to surprise me when I am going from a stop to merge onto a local highway and I floor it - I keep expecting the engine to explode. But, of course, it does not. I keep expecting when I want to pass and I drop it not one, but two gears, suddenly, that I will be leaving engine parts by the side of the road. That does not happen either - I merely overtake anything I want and slip effortlessly back into traffic - with a SEG on my face!

There are other beautiful and fast cars out there. But this one is mine and I intend to enjoy it to the fullest! It might hurt its resale value, but, strangely, resale value does not put a smile on my face.

To all my 6 speed friends out there, drive in good health - and don't forget to speed through the roses now and again!

Nice to read a post like this. Too many posts about 991's breaking down on people, and it gives a bad impression. I had my 997.2S for 30 months and 30k miles when I traded it for the race car. But it was by far the best DD, other than hauling people around part. I imagine the 991S to be that much better.
Enjoy and thanks for the post.

Amen, my 991S Cab is great at 5,500 mi. and counting fast. I love the car and all of its moving parts, noises and great reflexes on the road. I am surprised daily on what a great all around car it is. And yes it's nice to see a positive post instead of all the I wish it did this or it doesn't do this any more posts! Enjoy the ride all!

Good for you! I agree it's quite an amazing car. I have yet to encounter anything really wrong with it. For the price and beauty you could expect it to be fragile. Yet for years they have modified these cars for rallies, racetracks, and whatnot. Quite tough little beasties.

Great Post!

Looking forward to seeing the upper limits of the tach as well. Still during break-in for another 1,000 miles.

Think I'm going to stick to the Porsche 4,000 RPM "break-in" until 2,100 even though my I've been told by others it's okay to "drive it like you stole it" right off the lot.

Hear it is a much different car above 4,000 RPM. So far, it's quick..., but not the beast I hear being described. I'm sure "the beast" must reside on the other side 4,000 RPM and can't wait to bring it out.

Enjoy!!!

Well done. 4 months, 3600 miles so far for me.... no end in sight. Car loves the rain, clouds, traffic and even sleeps outside now and again. Guess what, it has not melted!!!

Hope to see u soon. Should we have a NY/NJ meet soon?

Congrats and well done! These cars are meant to be driven and enjoyed!

Almost 6 months, 10,000 miles (last week) and 10 track days so far. Running strong -with very minimal break in - since the first day.

YES- if only to see what else Brian has done to his beauty. Tough to do before Labor Day. Maybe in late September? Michael_s should be in. I found some great roads in Sussex county. Maybe we should start a new thread.

Wow, you are obviously having fun. Have not been able to get to the track, but I did do a few AutoX days - I enjoy those as well. Just push sports + in auto mode and you can really focus on the course. I am trying to find a group that does time/speed/distance rally's also. They sound like fun as well.

Serge, after almost 10 K miles and 6 months, any regrets on selling your dedicated racer? How is this "street" car holding up?
