991S or GT3 for DD? Discounts available?
Hi guys,
Long time lurker, just made an account here.
Currently I'm a BMW M guy and I do european deliveries every two years. I almost pulled on the trigger for a 14' M6 but decided against it last minute.
Now with summer over and me planning to go again this upcoming summer I thought about the idea of a new Porsche using the European Delivery system.
Contender #1: 991S. Pick it up in Zuffenhausen and do my thing.
Contender #2: GT3. I love the motor. 9k RPM. But is it livable as a daily driver?
991S:
Pros: Cheaper, easier to drive I'm sure
Cons: No 9k RPM, not as good looking of course.
GT3:
Pros: Well.. because GT3.
Cons: 130k starting price.
Ultimately, I'll pick between the two for a daily drive. But how about the pricing and finding a good deal. Only ONE dealership selling new Porsches in this WHOLE state of Oregon.
Now what would you guys take in the idea of leasing the two? Is cash king? Are there certain financing programs out such as BMW select? Leasing is ideal? What would be a nicer option as businessman, writing off mileage has it's perks.
The real question at hand is how much could I get off MSRP (percentage) for a car yet to be delivered? I've read everything from 5-15% off the MSRP?

I know the allocation seems like a problem to most for the GT3, but it's not a problem getting an allocation for me at the moment.
As a daily driver I would go with either 991s or turbo, the turbo will be closer to an M6 when it comes down to comfort and power, now I haven't driven the new GT3 nor the 991 turbo, however I have owned a 997.2 turbo and today I have a991s in the garage. The 991s can also be a somewhat comfortable ride, but you need to push it harder to get the fun stuff going, that said I enjoy it more than my old turbo.
If the new GT3 is anything close to the old GT3 I wouldn't recommend it as a DD, however it will for sure be a beast and I would love to own one as my Sunday/track car.

I don't have a Porsche just yet, but I am getting things inline for a TT order.
I think the GT3 is not so suitable as a DD although I admit it looks absolutely stunning. My main concerns are the low clearances on the front. In HK, it's a definite no no because of the entrance in car parks. You would most probably have to go dead slow at a 45 degree angle to get out every time. The TT on the other hand, has back seats if you have kids or need extra space for luggage. The GT3 I believe doesn't have them.

Nobody here can honestly answer your question since none of us have driven a 991 GT3.
I plan on upgrading my C2S in a year or two to a GT3 or TT so I have read all the reviews and I would not be comfortable ordering GT3 as a daily driver off those reviews. I would have to drive the car.
As much as a GT3 sounds like a great car I like the split personality of the Turbos. It is real nice to cruise on the highway in quiet mode or push a few buttons and thrash the crap out of it. I would not want a car that was in sport plus mode all the time. YMMV

The Turbo is like the M6, whereas the GT3 would be the younger but slower in straight line M3. Most prefer the feel the GT3, but no one can doubt the speed and comfy feel of the Turbo. 2.7 second 0-60's :P

If you are looking for the comfort and convenience of a DD, the 991 GT3 will be frustrating at best and downright annoying at worst. It is more a track animal than any previous iterations. What may enter into the equation is your location. If there are a lot of really interesting roads to drive near where you live, it might make the GT3 less annoying during the daily commutes. Living here in Florida, I would not consider the 991 GT3 as a DD as I once did because I just do not spend 2 weekends a month tracking it. I have the C2S and it's great. Alternately, if you are looking for a more special experience, the Turbo would probably be a better fit.

Well what reviews are you talking about? EVO, Autocar, etc. All those YouTube videos recognize the car as perfectly livable for day to day driving.

I also think it would be really easy for any reviewer to fall in love with that car on the first test drive only to find out later that it is not the correct car for them. I mean seriously who would not want a GT3 on a track or on the autobahn or any of the roads in those reviews. There is no shortage of past GT3 owners who did that and ended up selling the car in a year.
I hope the car is a good DD and I hope I own one some day. I would just want more then a few professional reviewers opinions and the normal internet speculation before I put 140 K in to the car.

Comparing an M6 to TT or SC is a joke. I also used to buy BMW until they got large and heavy not to mention that they forgot how to make good steering and suspension. Porsche is in a different league..
By all accounts and reviews the 991 iteration of the GT3 is the most road compliant ever. Having understood that I can also assume that it will be a firmer ride than an S with sport suspension and in normal mode be somewhere between a 991S in sport and sport plus mode.
If it were the only car in my garage I would have a hard time with it as a DD. BUT!.... The GT3 thrill is like no other and bang for buck nothing else comes close. So, if it's the only car you have as a daily get yourself a beat up car for a few bucks and use it sometimes.
So my 2p's would say if you have an allocation get the GT3! I'm going for it and have a confirmed order in. I know that even if you don't like it due to its scarcity you'll be able to pretty much sell it for what you paid.
BTW, as I write this I'm sitting at my Porsche dealer (S in for 5k service) who June confirmed and checked my build and allocation and gave me this.....a huge. YUM!!!

I talked to both my local Prosche Dealers in Atlanta, and the wait is long and they will be getting $20K over MSRP for them. I originally thought about one a well, but don't do "waiting" very well, so I just bought a '14 C2S cabriolet.
