Buying a MB GLK350 - any advice
Hey Guys
Thanks for all the advice and info. Went with the MB GLK. Had my wife drive it, the BMW X3, a Highlander, and something else. First time in my life I ever heard her say she liked a car was the MB - so that was that. The closest was the X3, but optioning it was a problem. She wanted a heated steering wheel, blind spot, and lane departure (she spends a lot of time on a very boring highway run home and has come close to nodding off so this was not a bad idea). Turns out you can't get a blind spot detection system at all on the X3. And the only way to get the lane departure system was to not get the winter package - which had a number of good features including heated seats, wheel and exterior mirrors, get the M package, which she did not want and added $3-4,000, add in the lane departure system, and then add back the heated seats - but you could not add back the heated wheel, even ala carte. And, it was like $53,000.
I did not look at the VW - I had such a bad experience with the local dealership when looking at a Jetta as a DD for me and training car for my daughter. The car was like $14,000 less in MSRP than the BMW 328xi that I eventually bought. And the lease - I was looking at both options, with the same amount down, and less miles, was only about $30/month less. I was fit to be tied. And to add insult to serious injury, they had the nerve to act shocked when I told them flat out it was a bad deal. They did not see that I had some idea of what I was doing and make a better offer. Instead, they tried to tell me otherwise. Brad B, I guess you have a better dealer - enjoy your SUV in good health, but that may be the last time I look at a VW and certainly is the last time I will go into that dealer.
J, I was a little surprised at Ray Catina - pleasantly. It is only 5 miles away so very convenient. But their rep is that they do not deal. The MSRP optioned as she wanted it was just over $50k. We got them to order one (due early December) for $45k flat - about 11% discount. I shopped around and did hit some of the websites - this was a reasonable deal.
Anyway, thanks for all of the help. We have gone from a mostly American car family (Ford) to a mostly DE family (BMW, MB and Porsche). Just the way those things turn out.
I did have a very interesting day a few weeks ago when I committed to the BMW, MB and a new kitchen - that is more money than my first house.
Oh well, just shut up and sign the checks!
