Buying a MB GLK350 - any advice

I posted this on the MB portion of the site, but, despite over 60 people taking a look, no one bothered to answer. I was hoping some of my P-car friends have an MB somewhere in their garage and could offer some advice.

My wife loved the 2014 GLK 350. We are looking for one reasonably optioned (premium 1, leather, lane tracking, heated seats and steering wheel, media) so the car will have an MSRP around $50,000. What percent discount is fair to expect?

Thanks guys!

We have a 2012 GLK350, and it is a great little car. We bought ours used for our nanny to use and it is small, fuel efficient and has all of the nice features of its big brothers (except for mbrace). The newer model's interior is a nice improvement over the model we own.

I don't know what to tell you about discounts, but these things are everywhere and no matter what, I imagine it will feel like a deal next to buying a Porsche!

Use truecar.com. It's awesome. I used it to get my last couple cars. Not only do they tell you what to expect, but they also get dealers competing for your purchase. They'll send you quotes.

We got an ML 350 Bluetec a few months ago and getting a reasonable discount involved emailing a bunch of dealers and asking them to give their best price. I found it far more difficult to get a good discount on this truck vs. the x5 Diesel we had previously.

However, I also was helping a family member get pricing on a GLK recently and decent discounts seemed to be available. I would contact 4 or 5 dealers close to you and ask for the best price they can do on a specific model they have in stock (you can see these on their web sites.) It always helps to shop on the last few days of the month/quarter/year as the dealers are often pushing hard to hit sales targets at this point and are more likely to give you a discount. If financing, it helps to have financing lined up so that you have something to bargain with if they want to offer you financing from the dealership.

PM/Text me if you'd like to chat about dealers in our area.

If you don't have the time to go through dealing with multiple dealers individually as I described above, truecar can often get you nearly as good a deal for a lot less effort. Personally, I enjoy the whole purchase process.

Hi J! I will likely do that in a day or so - or early next week (of to London for a day on Wednesday. We just started the process with Ray Catena (they are the closest dealer (under 5 miles) and, as I expected, they started with bust out retail. I sent them a note saying I did not pay that for my 991S when the new model was launched, I am not paying that for a mature SUV. The Mayor's suggestion was a great help - it was a very interesting site that I had not been to before. I may well use it in the end - it showed a dealer within 13 miles that would provide the car, optioned as I would like, for about $3,500 less. For now, that is good enough amo to use with guys at RC.

I am actually looking at two cars at the same time - too many. I have a lease coming up and my wife was in an accident and that is the last time we are getting in that car, even if it is not totaled. I like the smaller engine in the 328xi - fun car to drive and good enough push for every day. Anyway, thanks for the help!
Michael

P.s. I just say a 991 in the new Sapphire that replaces your color. Nice, but I like yours better!

Hope that works out for you at RC. My dad used to buy his MBs at RC. He always got horrible deals. I finally got him to try a comparable BMW last time he was changing and he got a great lease on a 650 Convertible from a dealer I have done business with before.

Have you looked at the Q5 2.0T? I just got back from Greece where I had one rented for 2 weeks. Great car in this class with a lot of pep in that 4 cylinder turbo. Not a great drivers car, though. The steering feel is a little numb.

I did look at the Q5. But, she puts a lot of miles on cars and I have a prejudice about Audi and mileage. Everyone (with one exception) who has them too long or for too many miles lives to regret it. We also looked at the BMW X3. But, and we are waiting for confirmation - their package system is nuts. She can't get a blind spot system at all - and she wants one as my daughter is about to start driving. And she can get either a heated steering wheel, or a lane departure sensor, but not both. And with the packages, the difference in price is $3-4,000! To get the lane departure system, you can't get the cold weather package, and you must get the M sport package. You can then order heated seats ala carte, but not the steering wheel - I assume because you get a sports steering wheel with the M package. If that works out to be correct, paying 3 grand more for two less options is a non-starter.

Funny, I spent a long time on the 991 picking everything and loved it. I spent moments on a BMW 328xi and it looks like it will be a very good daily driver - I would have thought that I would have spent a lot of time on it. Oh well

Thanks everyone. I posted on the M-B forum and while there were a number of hits, no one left any comments. I knew I could count on my P-friends!

my advice is PASS!! My wife had a 2009 GLK and it was a horrible car. Cheesy interior, terrible handling, oversize turning radius, frequent repairs (all under warranty but a pain), etc. The ML series is a much better way to go and not much more $. She now has a 2012 ML 350 and is very happy.

Wait a few months and get a Macan! It's going to be introduced next month in L.A.

Regarding the Q5. I have one for almost a year now and put 75000km (47000miles) on it untill now and never had one single problem. Got its regular service and that's all. Drove an S5 convertible before it and that car also never had one single problem.

I also recently had a GLK 350.

The biggest pet peeve is the small gas tank and the poor gas mileage. You are constantly filling up the gas tank. I think part of the problem is that they use a C-class engine but put it in a SUV with more weight.

However, it is a zippy little car that is convenient to get in and out of.

Buy the new Bluetech model. Great power/torque and excellent economy.

Don't know if your eligible, but use USAA if you can. Don't know what the current rebate on the GLK is right now but it's a rebate to the dealer after negotiating purchase price. Ive used it 3 or 4 times now. My parents have a GLK 350 and love it. Trading in E550 this Thursday for new C4S.

I was recently in the SUV market and shopped the GLK closely. It is a really nice little truck but ultimately we decided on a VW Touareg TDI and couldn't be happier. 400 ft lbs of torque is addicting! And the fuel mileage is great. We chose the top of the range Executive model which has pretty much every option, doodad and gizmo we could want.

I am sold on diesel and if I were to look at MB again I would only consider Bluetec.

Good luck with your choice. Enjoy.
