Question for 991 manual trans owners...
It is too low. You have to reach in an awkward way to set it. Ergonomically it was not well thought out. If you needed to deploy it in an emergency, it would be useless. I like the extra room it gives in the center console though.
I would imagine the rationale for not putting the e-brake button somewhere on the console had something to do with concerns over inadvertent activation.
Every other vehicle I own has the e-brake in the center console.
Inadvertent activation would require several very specific steps.
Like the semi-obscured fuel gauge, I think it's just a bad design.
I have a strong hatred for the electronic parking brake. I like the traditional hand break much better.
The problem with the electronic brake is that if your'e on any kind of an incline it will not disengage when you hit the gas. You have to manually pull the lever and it is in a very annoying location.

Well, I thought I had gotten used to it until this happened. I parked my car in a lot on the Penn State campus and started walking across the street to one of the buildings when I heard a crash behind me. I instinctively turned around and saw my car with it's rear end against a brick wall. For some reason I neither set the parking brake nor put the car in gear (I usually do both). The parking space was just level enough that the car didn't move as I was getting out of it, but had just enough incline that it rolled backward a few seconds later. To make matters worse, when the car hit the wall the back tires simultaneously hit a curb, causing the rear end to squat and the right side of the exhaust system to become bent. I can't imagine the car was going more than 5 mph when it hit, but it caused $7000 worth of damage. Good thing my insurance covered shear stupidity.
This. Every other car I've driven with an e-e-brake had it near the center console. Our XK has it right there, and I've never had a problem with it.
Obviously people feel strongly about this...
I'm still on the first page.

Even though I dislike electronic parking brakes, the placement of the button is not an issue for me. Many other cars also have it in the same location - especially cars that have a foot actuated e-brake.

It's sort of in-between where it should be. Mechanical you think about - set/unset, and deal with on hills. E-brake should just turn itself on by default when you turn off the motor, but it doesn't, but to make up for it it helps you stall while starting on slight inclines. I'm sure I'm missing what the problem was with a real parking brake - I assume it's dumbed down so it can be the same brake as on the PDK.

Lol similar thing happened to me, although not as bad.
Got out the car for a second while in neutral to say bye to my passenger (a girl who i like), the car was stable. About 30 seconds later she yells out "whats happening to your car!"
I turn to see it rolling backward and i had to run around jump in and hit the brakes! almost ran into another car. I cant fault the 991 that was just me being careless.
It all made me look really smooth.
Placement kinda annoys me because I came from a Audi S4, and its on the center console, I kinda wish the car had something to remind me that I didn't apply the ebrake though, I have gotten out and forgot to apply, so now I double check most of the time.
