If the Cayman had 400HP, would you still get a 911?
IMO the 911 of any generation is the quintessential Porsche. When i drive around with my 14 year old son and he points out a Boxter, Cayman, Cayenne, Panamera etc and says "Hey dad there is a Porsche", I was always let him know there is only one Porsche. That is a 911 period. There are only two kinds of Porsche owners in this world. 911 owners and Porsche owners that wish they owned a 911.

Funny...
... But inaccurate. Even plenty of 911 owners purchase something else within the Porsche lineup. Now, according your philosophy, why on Earth would that be?
. Actually I've been thinking about a beater 996 for this purpose lol..
That is actually what my first 996 (10 years ago) was for - because I didn't want to mess up my 'nice' cars. You never know. People are funny creatures.
Not sure which I would choose, but I would love to see a GT version of the cayman, with the 991 GT3 motor, wider fenders, and 305 tires in the rear.
Ps. Can you get a set of golf clubs in the current cayman? If not, that's a deal breaker for me

+1
Well said!
That's one of the reasons why I like my 991 so much. I can get 2 golfbags with 2 sets of clubs in the back, and a pushtrolley in the frunk. Not gonna happen in the Cayman.
991 versatility makes it unique !
Currently drive a 2007 turbo (stock) I got a 2014 Cayman S as a loaner for a week, its an amazing little car, sure it lacks the turbos power but it was the most well balanced car I been driving.
A Cayman "RS" with 400hp would be hard to ignore...I am almost considering the S instead of the turbo, well not really, but I would ask anyone planning to get a 997 to look at a new Cayman S instead...

A 400 HP Cayman?! That is a no brainer for sure! I bought my current Cayman S for the handling and balance. The 911 models are becoming GT cars, not sports cars. If I wanted a 4 seat car I would get a 4 door.
For my next vehicle I am looking for something with more power. The only realistic Cayman option would be to add a turbo. I'll likely leave Porsche if the line up stays the way it is as I have no interest in a 911; even if I did grow up dreaming of one.
I can't stand golf so I guess that issue doesn't apply. Versatility? I have a truck to carry stuff and a Cayman to auto-X.

I have both a new C2S and Boxter S (wifes). On tight turns, the Boxter is more nimble but I prefer the C2S on faster turns. While the Boxter is a little easier to drive, the C2S rewards me more and still retains some of the old 911 personality. The Boxter/Cayman is also a little cramped for those over 6 ft. The Boxter feels like a top end sports car and the C2S feels like a bottom end exotic. A Boxter that is a little longer with a spyder rear and 400 hp would be nice. I have a track car so for me the Cayman is pointless.
Yep, it's hard not to want it over the 991, unless you need the backseats or just feels claustrophobic in a two seater. I was fortunate to drive the Cayman R and the 981 Cayman base and S back to back. Getting into a 991 felt heavy and big. With 400bhp, the only thing the 911 has for it, is heritage.
